UN International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Becomes YU Partner Signed aide memoir and pledged to jointly pursue 'Global Saemaul Undong' Cooperation in emerging country support such as developing rural towns and eradicating global poverty by sharing the Saemaul Undong [Sep 11, 2014] The 'Global Saemaul Undong' that YU (President Noh Seok-kyun) has been pursuing is gaining speed as it stirred up a big issue in the international society. Governments of emerging countries, NGOs, the UN, WB (World Bank), AARDO (Afro-Asian Rural Development Organization), and other international organizations expressed their intent to participate in the goal of the global Saemaul Undong of developing rural towns of emerging countries and eradicating global poverty by sharing Korea's experiences with development and the Saemaul Undong. Recently, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) under the UN became a new partner of the global Saemaul Undong. YU International Development Cooperation Center Director (YU Vice President) Choi Oe Chool and IFAD Asia Pacific Regional Director Kim Hoon-ae exchanged an aide memoire to construct partnership after the 'Joint Seminar on Plans to Link Saemaul Undong and International Rural Development' that they co-hosted at the Gyeongju Hotel Hyundai on the 26th. Accordingly, the two institutes agreed to cooperate on △leading the improvement of quality of life and sustainable development policies to strengthen the capacities of people in rural areas around the world and △to jointly search for plans for improving international understanding and developmental directions for the importance of rural development. The main purpose is to provide support for the development of rural areas of emerging countries where the population in poverty are concentrated in. Its base is located in Rome, Italy and there are currently 172 member countries that are divided into A, B and C groups (as of June 2014). Korea joined in group C. IFAD carried out a total of 948 programs and projects with 120 governments around the world since 1978. Beneficiaries reached 420 million people. Current programs and projects include 52 programs in 22 countries in West Africa and Central Africa, 44 in 18 countries in East Africa and South Africa, 60 in 18 countries in Asia and the South Pacific, 41 in in 19 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, and 44 in 19 other countries. Regarding the partnership with IFAD, Choi Oe Chool said, "This is meaningful since the experience of Korea that successfully made developments in the local societies by overcoming poverty for rural areas through the Saemaul Undong in the 1970s was recognized by the international community including the UN to have great implications for solving the rural and agricultural issues of emerging countries who failed to overcome their problems even in the 21st century and to rise out of global poverty." He added, "YU and IFAD will spare no efforts to jointly develop the Saemaul Undong and Korea's development experience as a program for sustainable rural and agricultural development of emerging countries."

Held Chuseok festival for international students at the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul Experience Korean culture through traditional games such as yutnori and gejichagi International students participated in various events such as taekwondo samul-nori, traditional clothing fashion show [Sep 5, 2014] International students at the YU (President Noh Seok-kyun) Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul had a very special Chuseok. On the 5th, YU held the 'Global Saemaul Chuseok Festival' with international students enrolled in the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul (director Park Seung-woo) for Chuseok, Korean Thanksgiving and the biggest holiday of the nation. Over 100 people participated in this event including 70 international students from 31 different countries enrolled at the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul, YU Vice President Choi Oe Chool and faculty. In his opening address, Director Park Seung-woo said, "I hope that through this festival held on the biggest holidays of Korea, participants will have the opportunity to experience and understand traditional Korean culture and once again think about the value of family." He added, "I hope that you create a new community in your new 'home' in Korea and make many great memories." At the 'Global Saemaul Chuseok Festival' held at the YU Folk Village Gugye Seowon at 11 a.m., students at the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul who came to Korea to study the Saemaul Undong, Saemaul spirit, and the economic development and afforestation experiences of Korea had a fun time to understand Korean culture through traditional games such as yutnori, treasure hunts, jegi-chagi, three-legged races, and group jump ropes. International students also took part in taekwondo, samul-nori concerts, saxophone recitals, and fashion shows wearing their traditional clothes to spend the holiday season in Korea. Yutnori was played on a specially made board with drawings to represent the values of sharing, volunteering and creation needed for the global Saemaul Undong and Saemaul spirit of industriousness, self-dependency and cooperation, as well as the flags of different countries. Through this, international students were able to experience the traditional games of Korea, while also looking back on the Saemaul Undong in the world and the current status of Korea. Adu Ebenezer Appiah (33, 3rd term in Saemaul International Development Cooperation), an international student from Ghana at the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul who attended the festival, said, "I am very happy to have the opportunity to experience the Korean holidays and traditional cultures of Korea while studying here," and added, "Playing yutnori as a team will be an unforgettable experience." YU Vice-president (Director of the International Development Cooperation Center) Choi Oe Chool who planned the 'Global Saemaul Chuseok Festival' said, "I hope that this will be an opportunity for students who came from different parts of the world to the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul will be able to experience the traditional cultures and holidays of Korea and be able to get a glimpse of the spirit of Koreans, while having a good time experiencing the Saemaul spirit of industriousness, self-dependency and cooperation, as well as the values of the Global Saemaul Spirit of sharing, volunteering and creation through individual and team games."

YU Team wins 'Grand Prize, Runner-up, and Special Award' at the 5th Eubcheon Port Gallery Wall Painting Contest Added beauty and fun with works using the tales of Shimcheon and Byeoljubu Winning pieces to fill the 'Eubcheon Port Wall painting Town' along the East Coast [Sep 5, 2014] “A town's ambience can be completely changed with just one wall painting!” YU students added to the beauty of a coastal town filled with beautiful wall paintings. Students from the YU School of Fine Arts won the grand prize, runner-up and special awards at the '5th Eubcheon Port Gallery Wall Painting Contest' held at Eubcheon-ri, Yangnam-myeon in Gyeongju on the 23rd of last month. YU School of Fine Arts Yoo Eun-sang (24, senior) won the grand prize, and the Seo Ji-hyeon (22, junior), Jeon Hye-ji (21, junior) and Kwon Sun-hae (21, junior) team won the runner-up award, and the Eom Sang-yon (25, second term in master's degree course), Jin Jong-hwan (23, sophomore) and Kim Jong-min (22, sophomore) team won the special award. A total of 65 teams submitted their works to this contest co-hosted by the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. Wolsong Nuclear Plant and the Korea Fine Arts Association Gyeongju branch. Based on the uniqueness of the work and practicality of the wall painting, 10 large wall paintings 17 small wall paintings and 1 illustration was selected. The 80 members of the 28 final teams painted the walls of the Eubcheon Port Wall Painting Town from July 12 to August 10 based on their works. The completed wall paintings were judged to select 1 first place, 1 runner-up, 3 third places, 5 complimentary awards, and 5 special awards. <First Place 'Sea in Fairy Tales-Shimcheong'> The theme of this contest was 'Creative Works based on Children's Literature' and the winning work by Yoo Eun-sang was titled 'Sea in Fairy Tales-Shimcheong'. Yoo said "When I thought about Eubcheon Port where the wall painting would be made, the first thing that came to mind was the sea. 'Shimcheongjeon', the folklore loved by men and women of all ages came to mind so I used it as my theme." She added, "In the tale, Shimcheong appears on top of a lotus flower, but I wanted to add some fun to it by putting her on the move with a sea turtle of another fairy tale, 'Byeoljubujeon'." The 'Goblin World' that showed goblins, which often appear in folklores, playing in nature with children won the third place award, while the 'Antarctic Kingdom' that mixed and matched the 2013 smash hit animation 'Frozen' with Antarctica won the special award. <Third place winner 'Goblin World'> <Special award winner 'Antarctic Kingdom'> Jeon Hye-jin, who won third place, said, "I was always interested in wall paintings because unlike regular paintings in exhibits, it is a popular form that can be seen by anyone in public areas," and added, "I hope that people who come to this town can have a moment of relaxation by looking at our paintings." Meanwhile, the Eubcheon Port Wall Painting Town started in 2010 with 53 pieces through the 1st concert, and has been adding about 50 pieces every year. With the end of this year's contest, the nation's biggest wall painting town was made in which over 210 pieces are shown across a 2km long area stretching along the East Coast.

"Need to globalize industry-academic cooperation in the global age" YU President Noh Seok-kyun visits universities and industry-academic cooperation institutes of China such as the Capital University of Economics and Business and the China Technology Exchange Center to discuss plans to expand global industry-academic cooperation [Sep 2, 2014] YU (President Noh Seok-kyun) visited different parts of China to strengthen their global industry-academic cooperation. YU President Noh Seok-kyun, LINC Project Team Director Lee Hee-young and Global Industry-Academic Cooperation Center Director Park Il-gyu visited the Korea-China Science & Technology Cooperation Center, Capital University of Economics and Business, China Technology Exchange Center, and the China Science Technology Development Strategy Research Institute located in Beijing on August 28 and 29. This visit was made to strengthen the school's industry-academic capacities in light of the internationalized age. For this, Mr. Noh visited major universities and industry-academic institutes of China to discuss measures on constructing a global industry-academic research cooperation infrastructure, personnel exchange and joint research promotion plans. Mr. Noh first visited the Korea-China Science & Technology Cooperation Center (Director Yoon Dae-sang) at 3 p.m. on August 28. This center was established in 1993, one year after making diplomatic ties between Kore and China to act as a window for science technology exchange and a cooperation hub between China and Korea and is currently under the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning. Mr. Noh met with Director Yoon Dae-sang and listened to explanations on Chinese science technology manpower, science technologies and the infrastructure status in connection with the center and held discussions on measures to promote YU's global industry-academic cooperation and research exchange with China. Afterwards, YU and the Korea-China Science & Technology Cooperation Center signed an MOU to find global industry-academic cooperation partners for YU. During the second day of their visit, they had a busy schedule visiting three different places on the same day. In the morning, Mr. Noh visited the Capital University of Economics and Business and met with Dean Wang Jiaqiong to discuss student exchange and industry-academic programs. The Capital University of Economics and Business has a 50 year history and is one of the central universities of Beijing and is ranked 8th in China for finance and economics. The Capital University of Economics and Business has signed an exchange agreement with YU in October 2004 and has been actively exchanging students since then. During this visit, the two universities discussed ways to promote student, faculty and researcher exchange, join research in humanities and sciences, possibility of developing internationalization programs, and other programs that could make the relationship of the two sister schools stronger. Mr. Wang requested cooperation from YU for short-term student exchange of 2 to 3 months, installation of a joint diploma program, dispatch of students to the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul, and participation in the global Capstone Design Camp for the safety management and engineering sectors. Furthermore, the two schools also agreed to extend the MOU, which was scheduled to expire in 2015. In the afternoon, Mr. Noh and his party then visited the China Technology Exchange Center and the China Science Technology Development Strategy Research Institute. The China Technology Exchange Center is technology exchange service institute jointly established by Beijing City, the Chinese Science Technology Ministry, Chinese Intellectual Properties Office, and the Chinese Science Institute in August 2009. Its main duties are to carry out industrialization of science technology outcomes of projects carried out by the central and regional governments of China and to combine the R&D capacities of colleges and research centers with the technological demands of companies to provide support for joint industry-academic-research R&D projects. Accordingly, YU discussed methods to construct an industry-academic-research cooperation cluster and possibilities for YU to participate in technology exchange and industrialization between Korea and China. The tight schedule ended at the China Science Technology Development Strategy Research Institute. The Chinese Minister of Science Technology Wang is also the director of this research center. Mr. Noh checked the industry-academic-research cooperation policies and success cases of China to look for ways to promote YU's industry-academic cooperation. Noh Seok-kyun, who had a very tight schedule in China, said "In order for true globalization of colleges, it is important not only to conduct exchange with educational and research institutes with foreign colleges, but also to enhance the school's international industry-academic cooperation capacities by being linked with foreign national research institutes and industry-related organizations." He added, "As we put our foot in the door for practical discussions with major research centers and government institutes of China with this visit to Beijing, it is expected that YU's global industry-academic-research cooperation will be promoted even further.

Alliance teams led by School of Architecture takes 1st and 2nd place at the '2014 Bio-Digital City Seoul International Event' Creative ideas and architectural completeness on 'urban farming architecture' [Aug 28, 20148] <School of Architecture students who took 1st and 2nd place at the ‘2014 Bio-Digital City Seoul International Event’> (from top left to right, Jung Yoo-jin, Kim Ji-eun, Bae Jin-sol, bottom row from left to right Jung Tae-gwon, Shin Yong-hwan) The YU School of Architecture is being reborn as the cradle of next-generation architectural experts. An alliance team made up mainly of YU students won the 'French Ambassador to Korea Award' and the 'French Cultural Center Director of Korea Award', which are 1st and 2nd places, at a workshop held during the '2014 Bio-Digital City Seoul International Event'. YU School of Architecture students Jung Tae-gwon (24, 2nd term in master's degree program), Shin Yong-hwan, (23, senior), Bae Jin-sol (20, junior), Chungang University Graduate School of Advanced Imaging Science, Multimedia and Film Art Kim Do-hee (24, 1st term in master's degree program), and Daegu University Department of Architectural Engineering Lee Seung-hee (25, senior) made up a five-member alliance team to win the French Ambassador to Korea Award. The four member alliance team comprised of the Chungang University Graduate School of Advanced Imaging Science, Multimedia and Film Art Baek Jung-gi (41, 1st term in master's degree program), YU School of Architecture Kim Ji-eun (23, 5th year), Jung Yoo-jin (21, senior), and Korea University School of Architecture Hyun Jin-sun (21, junior) won the French Cultural Center Director of Korea Award. Of the nine members that took first and second place, five were students from the YU School of Architecture. This workshop, which was co-supervised by the City of Seoul and the French Embassy and hosted by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, Seoul City Citizens Hall, French Culture Center in Korea, and the International City Joint Research Center, was held from August 5 to 14 at the Seoul Citizens Hall Taepyeong Hall and Workshop Room. The theme of the workshop was 'Tomorrow's Seoul Project'. During the workshop period, the participants had the opportunity to come up with and share creative ideas to plan the Hangang Riverside of Seoul with nature-friendly future urban environment 'urban agricultural architecture' that modern society now aims at. Urban agricultural architecture refers to the new architectural mode that combines residential functions and farming functions in urban living areas. Over 50 college and graduate students majoring in architecture, advanced media and landscaping from colleges in Korea, France, Belgium, USA, England and Canada participated in this workshop. Participants made teams of 4 to 5 with students of other nationalities, schools and majors to exchange their fields of majors from 9 a.m to 9 p.m. every day during the 10 day workshop to design a creative city. Each team received instructions from over 20 expert tutors who specialize in different fields and submitted a 5 minute video and 3D printer model for their final works. <French Ambassador to Korea Award> Upon final judgment, the piece that won the French Ambassador to Korea Award was ‘A TUFT (Algorithm of Nature Takes Urban Farming To Future) City’. Shin Yong-hwan explained the concept saying “We created a completely new city by reinterpreting and applying the rules of nature such as light, wind and water in an existing city (Yeouido)," and added, "Though it was made in a short period, it was judged to have high architectural perfection and to be highly practical." The work that received the French Cultural Center of Korea Director's Award was ‘WEAVE (WE Assembled in the VEnue)’. Like its name, it weaved different spaces and added a common work element of farming within such spaces to propose a residential area in which people can communicate naturally. <French Cultural Center of Korea Director's Award> Kim Ji-eun, who received the French Cultural Center of Korea Director's Award, said, "I was able to learn a new perspective for looking at architecture by carrying out projects with students of various majors from different parts of the world." She added, "Our team had a great architectural idea, but what really helped us received good reviews was because our excellence in visual imaging expression of such ideas." Jung Tae-gwon, who received the French Ambassador to Korea Award, said, "I've become more interested in architectural planning so I would like to conduct more in-depth studies." He also added, "After completing my master's degree, I want to experience corporate life for about three years and then begin my PhD program at an architectural graduate school in the United States."

Over 500 people from 38 countries gathered at the Gyeongju Hyundai Hotel from the 27th to 29th with the goal to overcome poverty among emerging countries Pursue sharing Saemaul Undong experience and cooperation for joint prosperity of global community Global Saemaul Forum Chairman Choi Oe Chool proposes installation of 'international organization' to practice the Saemaul Spirit [Aug 27, 2014] The '2014 Global Saemaul Forum' was held successfully at Gyeongju on the 27th to share the experiences of the Saemaul Undong with the world. This forum, which was attended by experts from 38 different countries, was held in order to search for practical plans for the global prosperity and mutual cooperation of the global community, while sharing the experience of the Saemaul Undong, which is local community development research model and a UNESCO Memory of the World as strategies to overcome poverty of emerging countries of the OECD. This forum, which was held at the Gyeongju Hotel Hyundai Convention Hall from the 27th to the 29th, was co-hosted by YU (President Noh Seok-kyun), Gyeongsangbuk-do (Governor Kim Gwan-yong) and the Global Saemaul Forum (Chairman Choi Oe Chool), and was sponsored by the Korea International Cooperation Agency, Korea Rural Community Corporation, Korea Saemaul Undong Center, and the Korea Development Foundation. This forum, which is held under the theme 'Global Cooperation Strategy to Overcome Poverty in Emerging Countries-Focusing on Sharing the Saemaul Undong Experience', will be attended by over 500 persons such as senior public officials on rural development, high-level policy makers for local society development, international organization workers, Global Saemaul Undong practitioners, and academic experts from a total of 38 countries from Southeast Asia, Southwest Asia, Middle East, Central Asia, Africa, Central America, South America, Australia, and China, as well as Senegal Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Facilities, Laos Vice Minister of Agriculture, Vice Director of the Vietnam National Ho Chi Minh Academy, and the Nicaraguan Ambassador to Korea. At the opening ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on the 27th, Gyeongsangbuk-do Vice Minister of Administration Joo Nak-young gave a welcoming address, YU President Noh Seok-kyun gave an opening address, Korea Saemaul Undong Center Director Shim Yoon-jong and Korea Rural Community Corporation President Lee Sang-moo gave congratulatory addresses, followed by Global Saemaul Forum Chairman Choi Oe Chool's keynote address titled 'Saemul Undong with the Global Community to Prosper Together'. At the keynote address, Choi Oe Chool said, "Recently, the international society is showing interest in poverty, education, medicine, human rights, energy, and climate change issues of emerging countries and have made considerable efforts to make improvements. Despite such efforts, however, there are still 1.2 billion people living in the world with less than 1.25 dollars a day, and many countries are suffering from under development." He added, "The Saemaul Undong that aims for strengthening the capacity for self-dependency of residents and self-initiated development based on the spirit of industriousness, self-dependency and cooperation is receiving attention as a new model for improving the poverty issue of emerging countries and for developmental cooperation through an upgraded version that adds the values of sharing, volunteering and creation. Thus, we hope that this forum can be an opportunity to look for the best direction for sustainable international development cooperation, and as a place for actively discussing ways to have the international community share the experience of the Saemaul Undong." At the end of his keynote address, Choi proposed to install a privately initiated international organization called the 'Global Saemaul Spirit Practice Alliance'. Choi emphasized, "It is necessary to have a privately initiated international organization that can systematically support and promote the practice of the Saemaul spirit to construct a prosperous global community," while adding, "The assertive participation and roles of various international organizations, countries, private companies and experts are essential to overcome the common task of the world by practicing the Saemaul spirit." On the 27th, the first day, seminars by topics and genera session 1 and 8 special sessions will be conducted for active presentations and discussions by experts from different countries, followed by a special lecture and general session 2 on the 28th. Participants of the forum will then visit industrial sites and the place where the Saemaul Undong originated in Korea from the afternoon of the 28th to the 29th to experience the economic development site of Korea, while sharing the experience. During the seminar by theme on the 27th, it will unfold in the order of △Session 1, 'Overcoming Poverty in Emerging Countries and Global Prosperity', △Session 2 ‘Global Saemaul Undong Sharing Strategy’ △Session 3, ‘Effective Emerging Country Development Pursuance System’ △Session 4 ‘Projects and Tasks to Overcome Poverty by Country’, followed by presentations, discussions and cases studies by experts from the respective countries. In General Session 1, Korea Rural Community Corporation President Lee Sang-moo will oversee presentations and discussions by experts on 'Global Cooperation Strategy to Overcome Poverty in Emerging Countries-Focusing on Sharing the Saemaul Undong Experience'. Also, three special sessions will also be held under the theme of 'Ideas to Utilize the Saemaul Undong to Overcome Poverty'. On the 28th, the second day of the forum, KOICA President Kim Young-mok will give a special lecture titled 'Post 2015 Development Agenda and the Global Saemaul Undong' and Ho Chi Minh Academy of Vietnam Vice Director Nguyen will deliver a lecture titled 'Strategies to Pursue the Saemaul Undong in Vietnam', and in General Session 2, discussions among experts will be held under former YU President Lee Hyo-soo on 'Post 2015 Development Agenda and Global Saemaul Undong'. Senegal Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Facilities Dogo Seck said, "I was deeply impressed by the amazing growth of Korea through the Saemaul Undong. I am attending this forum to find solutions for new systems for the acceleration of Senegal's agricultural development and national growth," while adding, "I hope that through various ideas and cases of using the Saemaul Undong, we will be able to establish an effective development plan that can be applied in Senegal."

‘2014 KSP Saemaul Undong Seminar’ held Supervised by the Export-Import Bank of Korea, and co-hosted by YU and International Fund for Agricultural Development YU-IFA exchanges aide memoir [Aug 26, 2014] YU (President Noh Seok-kyun) held the '2014 KSP (Knowledge Sharing Program) Saemaul Undong Seminar' with the International Fund for Agricultural Development', a UN organization. This seminar, which was held at the Gyeongju Hotel Hyundai at 10 a.m. on the 26th, was set to search for mutual cooperation plans for rural development of emerging countries and to eradicate global poverty using Korea's developmental experience and experience with the Saemaul Undong. This international academic seminar was overseen by the Export-Import Bank of Korea and was comprised of presentations and discussions by IFAD personnel, Ministry of Strategy and Finance, Export-Import Bank of Korea, and Korean experts on agriculture, rural development and Saemaul Undong. Experts in rural development and Saemaul from 22 countries including Ghana, South Africa, Rwanda, Malawi, Mozambique and Ecuador also attended where presentations and discussions were made focusing on past experiences and cases. At the opening ceremony, Ministry of Strategy and Finance External Economic Bureau Director Yoon Tae-yong made the opening speech, followed by a welcoming address by YU Vice-president Choi Oe Chool, a congratulatory address by Export-Import Bank Senior Vice President Shim Seob, and followed by a keynote speech IFAD Asia-Pacific Director Kim Hoon-ae. In the first session carried out under the theme 'Comparative Analysis of Saemaul Undong with Other Development Models', presentations were made on 'Saemaul Undong and IFAD Applicability' and 'Core Elements of Rural Development Models for Emerging Countries', and a panel discussion on 'Similarities and Differences of the Saemaul Undong with Other Development Models'. In the second session, presentations on 'Overseas Saemaul Rural Development Cases and Implications', 'KSP Saemaul Undong Research Cases and Implications' and 'Cases and Implications of Rural Development in Emerging Countries' under the theme of 'Case Studies of Saemaul Undong and Emerging Country Rural Development', followed by a panel discussion on 'Core Elements for Application of Rural Development of Saemaul Undong'. In the third session, there was a presentation on 'Search for Plans for Global Application' and a panel discussion on 'Korean-type ODA Perspective and Multilateral Perspective of the IFAD'. YU Vice President Choi Oe Chool who co-hosted this international academic seminar said, "Korea's experience in rural development and escape from poverty through the Saemaul Undong in the 1970s and efforts to overcome rural and agricultural issues and eradication of poverty for emerging countries have huge implications," while adding, "IFAD, and international organization with 172 member countries recognized through this international academic seminar that the experience of the Saemaul Undong can be a useful possibility for emerging countries. Furthermore, it is a very meaningful academic meeting as it searches for joint plants with YU, which has 37 years of experience in Saemaul Undong research and education." Meanwhile, YU exchanged an aide memoir with the IFAD and pledged to cooperate in joint research on Saemaul Undong, joint-research on projects carried out by the IFAD and Korea's public development assistance institutes, and encouragement of rural development programs. The IFAD is the UN's 15th specialized institute established in November 1977 for the agricultural development of emerging countries and to increase food production. Korea joined IFAD in January 1978 and served for three consecutive terms as the executive director country from 1981 to 1996.

Quit as college instructor in 2013 and enrolled at the YU Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul Earned master's degree in Saemaul Undong Theory and Practice in 1 year and 6 months and awarded best poster paper award Ambassador of Papua New Guinea attends diploma ceremony on the 22nd [Aug 22, 2014] < Papua New Guinea Ambassador to Korea Bill Veri (third from left) attended the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul to congratulate the reception of a master's degree by a Papua New Guinean student Uno (fourth from left). > “After graduating, I will return to Papua New Guinea and take the lead in spreading the Saemaul Undong!” An international student who came to YU from the island country in the South Pacific, Papua New Guinea, finally made his dream come true after a year and a half. This person is Konisimo Uno (30). At 12:30 p.m. on the 22nd, he received his master's degree for majoring in 'Saemaul Undong Theory and Practice' at the 2013 diploma ceremony held at the YU Cheonma Art Center Sapphire Hall. This was 1 year and 6 months after enrolling in the YU Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul master's degree program in March of 2013. He was awarded the best poster paper award at the ceremony and had the honor to make a speech on behalf of the graduating students. Papua New Guinea Ambassador to Korea Bill Veri (59) also came to congratulate his reception of this diploma. Ambassador Veri praised Uno saying, "He is the first citizen of Papua New Guinea to major in and receive a diploma in the Saemaul Undong," and added, "Please do your best as an expert of the Saemaul Undong so that it can take root in Papua New Guinea." Uno served as a biology instructor at the University of Goroka in Papua New Guinea before coming to YU. However, he quit his job at the university with the passion to become the cornerstone for development similar to Korea in Papua New Guinea. He gave up the career he built up in order to come to YU and learn the completely new field of 'Saemaul Sciences'. His new challenge began after meeting a Korean businessman. After learning about the Saemaul Undong and Korea's development history from a businessman who lived in Papua New Guinea for 25 years, he heard news of recruiting applicants for the Saemaul Undong training program in Gumi, which he applied to and was selected for. And then in November 2012, after setting foot in Korea as part of a six member training delegation that included two government officials of Papua New Guinea, he spent two weeks for the Saemaul Undong training hosted by the City of Gumi. During the training, he finally knew what his dream was. After becoming determined to receive more systematic education and training on the Saemaul Undong, he finally enrolled in the YU Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul in March of 2013. He never missed a day in his major of 'Saemaul Undong Theory and Practice' that organized the Saemaul Undong and Saemaul spirit into an academic discipline from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day, and studied as hard as he could. He explained, "During my training program in 2012, I learned that current Papua New Guinea was in a very similar situation as that of Korea in the 1960s. That is why I became confident that by studying the development process of Korea, it would be possible to overcome underdevelopment in Papua New Guinea," and added, "MY purpose of studying here is to find ways to integrate the Saemaul Undong in my country through more specific and practical studies." He also stated, "If I have the opportunity, I want to go on to my PhD program at YU." He added, "But for now, I would like to go back home and spread the Saemaul Undong and spirit that I learned here. I also want to help more people in Papua New Guinea to participate in Saemaul Undong educational programs in Korea." At the graduation ceremony of the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul, 19 students from 14 countries including Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Senegal, Nepal and the United States received their master's degree. Meanwhile, YU held its 2013 second half graduation ceremony at the Cheonma Art Center Chamber Hall at 10:30 a.m. on the 22nd. 1,629 students received their bachelor's 472 received their master's and 74 received their doctorate's. Also, Kang Sun-ja, who transferred to the Japanese Language and Literature Department in 2010, received her bachelor's at the age of 60. 153 international students (78 bachelors. 58 masters, 17 doctorates) received their diplomas at YU including Mohar Dey (27) from India who received his PhD in mechanical engineering.

YU celebrated their first winner at the 1st PES held in 2011 and won the grand prize and top finisher continuously to the 6th PES held in 2014. At the 7th camp, they also won the grand prize demonstrating once again the talents of the students majoring in nuclear engineering. The honors went to a junior in the School of Mechanical Engineering, Kim Da-hye (21). She is currently double-majoring in nuclear engineering and won the grand-prize, which is the runner-up award, at the 7th PES Camp held at the 'KEPCO E&C HR Development Center) in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do from June 30 to July 9 and received a full scholarship for two semesters. PES is a specialized education program held by KEPCO for college students in order to foster creative and competitive engineers in the power technology sector. A total of 66 engineering students from 33 universities in Korea including YU, Seoul National University, KAIST and POSTECH participated. The participating students completed focused hands-on education to become energy experts for nine nights and ten days on the introduction to nuclear energy and thermal power, lectures on renewable energy plant environment facilities and power plant design, as well as comprehensive evaluation on experimentation, presentation, discussion and attendance on their major, as well as making field trips to the Hadong Thermal Power Plant and Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant. Thus, the YU major in nuclear engineering has a total of two first place and five runner-up winners at the 'PES' Camp hosted by KEPCO. At the PES '1st Camp' held in July 2011, Park Hyeon-jae (25), who was a junior at the time in the Department of Electrical engineering, won first place for the first time. In the '3rd Camp' held in July 2012, Park Min-woo (25), who was then a junior in electronic engineering, won the runner-up award, and at the '4th Camp' held in February 2012, Jung Yong-won (26), who was then a junior in electronic engineering won first place. Then, in July 2013 at the '5th Camp' held in July 2013, Song Hoon-young (23) who was then a junior in the Department of Civil Engineering and Shin Nam-jin (23) who was also a junior in the School of Mechanical Engineering won the runner-up awards, while at the '6th Camp' held in January 2014, Jung Won-seok (23) who was then a junior in the School of Mechanical Engineering won the runner-up award. The YU Major in Nuclear Engineering was newly established in 2011 and is under the School of Mechanical Engineering. It is a convergence and integrative major in which the Department of Civil Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering, Department of Electronic Engineering, School of Materials Science and Engineering, and the School of Chemical Engineering all participate in. A minimum of 35 credits related to the major must be completed and at least 16 credits in major core classes must be completed as efforts to raise expertise. Upon graduation, two bachelor's degrees in engineering are given such as their original major and the affiliated nuclear engineering major.

YU soccer team boldly competed against Sungnam FC of the K League Classic at the final 8 at the 2014 FA Cup. Though losing the game, YU soccor team was evaluated as the most promising one to become the first ever college team to advance to the final at the FA Cup before long. They are the Specimens of Y-type human resources with special characters such as progressiveness, creativity, professionalism, and humanity. The YU soccer team, which is led by the brilliant manager Kim Byeong-soo, barely lost to Sungnam FC of the K League Classic by 1-2 at the final 8 of the '2014 Hana Bank FA Cup' held at the Tancheon Stadium in Sungnam on the 13th. It was not a lop-sided match. YU came onto the pitch against the professional home team using a 'five-back' tactic. Their game was not bad. The 'lop-sided win' that the Sungnam coach promised was broken by the strong resistance of YU. Unfortunately, they let up a couple of goals. We will now have to wait for the next to see a college team make it to the semi-finals at the FA Cup for the first time ever. However, the YU team did their best in the 90 minute match and the great strategist, Manager Kim, sincerely encouraged the team. "We lost, but we did all we could." Kim added, "This is not the end. Though we are disappointed, I hope that the players will mature even more through this experience." Upon hearing news of the disappointing loss, YU President Noh Seok-kyun said, "They were not the best when the first started. But, Manager Kim Byeong-soo's excellent leadership, trust of students, and the undying passion of the students and their respect for the manager has shown new possibilities for college soccer." Mr. Noh added, "Our soccer team that is made up of character, progressiveness, creativity, and expertise are truly exemplary 'Y-type human resources'." At one time the YU soccer team was always last place. But after Kim Byeong-soo stepping in as the manager and head coach in 2008, everything changed. In his third year at the 2010 Autumn College Football Federation Cup, YU took home the trophy for the first time in 33 years. After winning the 2012 Spring Federation Cup, they also won the U League last year, thus standing on the pinnacle of college soccer. The YU soccer team is currently on a nine-game winning streak in the U League and also became the third ever college team to make it to the final 8 in the FA Cup that is joined by both amateur and professional teams. YU has become a football powerhouse graduating professional soccer players such as Shin Jin-ho (Al-Siliya), Lee Myung-joo (Al-Ain), Kim Seung-dae and Son Joon-ho (Pohang), and Lim Chae-min (Sungnam). The FA Cup (Football Association Cup) is a tournament to find the best Korean team among all teams registered in the Football Association, whether professional or amateur. Korea has held the national football tournament joined by all adult football teams including semi-pro and college teams since 1946. However, with the launching of the professional football league in 1983, the national football tournament became a tournament only for amateur teams. Thus, many people began raising their to voice to establish the FA Cup to determine the best soccer team in Korea, whether professional or amateur, and thus, the FA CUP began in 1996 hosted by the KFA. YU made it to the final 8 after beating KORAIL on the 11th of last month through a shoot-out in which they ousted KORAIL 5-4 after a 1:1 tie in the final 16 match of the 2014 FA Cup.
