Lu Tan Sheng in PhD Program (Sociology) receives 'national excellent self-paid international student scholarship' High research activities in past two years such as publishing 9 domestic and international papers and 3 presentations in academic conferences [2015-4-13] An international student from China studying at YU will receive a national scholarship from the Chinese government. Lu Tan Sheng (26) completed his PhD course at the YU Graduate School of Sociology in February of this year and is currently working on his PhD thesis. Mr. Lu received a scholarship together with a plaque from Minister Hao Shiao Pei of the Chinese Embassy in Korea at the '2014 National Excellent Self-paid International Student Scholarship of China' hosted by the Chinese embassy on the 4th. The 'National Excellent Self-paid International Student Scholarship' granted by the Chinese government was enacted by the 'National International Student Fund Management Committee' in 2003 and is a program to offer scholarships to international students studying abroad in PhD courses in natural science or social sciences on their own expenses who have displayed excellent research achievements. The 'National Excellent Self-paid International Student Scholarship' is not just simply a financial scholarship, but represents that the recipient of the scholarship is an outstanding international student recognized by the Chinese government, and is expected to have considerable impact after earning their diploma and returning back to their home country. This scholarship began in five countries where there were the highest number of Chinese international students such as England, China, Japan, Germany and France, and it is now offered to students in a total of 32 countries including Korea. There were 500 recipients of the '2014 National Excellent Self-paid International Student Scholarship'. There were ten Chinese international students in Korea who received this scholarship including Mr. Lu at YU, and other students at Seoul National University, Korea University, Sungkyunkwan University, and Pusan National University. In particular, this scholarship is normally given to students in PhD programs in natural sciences, and it is rare for social science majors like Mr. Lu to receive the scholarship. Only two students including Mr. Lu in Korea majoring in social sciences received this scholarship. Mr. Lu studied at Soochow University in China and came to YU for his master's degree in 2011. He has been studying at YU for five years since then. After deciding to study in Korea, he visited a number of universities in Korea and spoke with professors and finally decided to go with YU. He said, "The biggest reason I chose YU was because I like the study environment," and added, "I want to thank the school and professors for helping me to concentrate only on my studies until I completed my PhD course." The 'National Excellent Self-paid International Student Scholarship' recipients are selected after two very strict screenings. After the first screening by the respective embassies in the country, the Chinese government conducts the second review for all international students around the world who passed the first screening. The Chinese government evaluates research theses, international academic conference presentations, and awards among students in PhD courses to select the recipients. Mr. Lu published a total of nine papers in the past two years in professional academic journals, while also presenting his research results a total of three times in domestic and foreign academic conferences, as part of his highly active research activities. Mr. Lu, who majors in social issue psychology, said, "I am highly interested the sense of alienation and alienation psychology. I will carry out research on positive and negative alienation in various fields such as political-economical alienation, social-cultural alienation, and labor alienation," while adding, "In addition to research activities, I would like to gain a wide range of lecturing experiences and if I am given the opportunity after earning my PhD, I would like to conduct research and lecture at either a Chinese or Korean university." Throughout society, there is a tendency to have less interest and support for social sciences compared to natural sciences or engineering, but I hope that more people will begin to show more interest in the social science sectors in the future."

College of Pharmacy Professor Kim Jong-oh's research team produces effective drug carriers with higher internal safety Basis for developing cancer medicine with low side effects and high anti-cancer effects Published in latest issue of 'Chemical Communications', a prominent international academic journal in the chemistry sector [2015-4-1] <College of Pharmacy Professor Kim Jong-oh (left) and Dr. Thiruganesh Ramasamy> A YU research team succeeded in producing nano-particle drug carriers that can be used as cancer medicine with low side effects and high anti-cancer effects. The research team used Doxorubicin and Irinotecan, which are drugs that suppresses 'Topoisomerase I and II', enzymes that exist in large amounts in cancer cells, to form a polymer electrolyte complex through static coupling, and then specially coated it with bio-friendly lipid membrane to create a nano-particle drug carrier with higher stability in the body and effective drug carrying features. The research results made by YU Professor of Pharmacy Kim Jong-oh (40) and Thiruganesh Ramasamy (32), from India who earned his PhD in pharmacology at the YU Graduate School of Pharmacy were published in the April 2015 issue of <Chemical Communications (IF (impact factor) = 6.718)>, which is a prominent international academic journal published by the Royal Society of Chemistry in England. Normally during cancer treatment, combination therapy that uses two or more anti-cancer drugs is used to enhance the anti-cancer effect. Combination therapy is designed empirically based on the max prescription (max amount administered without having harmful reactions due to drugs) of two different anti-cancer drugs and thus has synergy effects within the body. In actual clinical trials, however, synergy effects can drop considerably or result in severe side effects such as suppression of immune system or cardiotoxicity. Therefore, the development of 'Ratiometric nanomedicine' that can exactly adjust emissions for the concentration and ratio of drugs by carrying the two drugs simultaneously in the cancer area when administering to cancer patients has been in demand. The nano-particle drug carrier produced was found not only to have high anti-cancer effects, but also considerably lower side effects, so it is expected to become a basis for development of new drugs that can be used in cancer treatment in the future. Professor Kim Jong-oh, who participated in this study as a corresponding author, said, "The cancer drug emission control technology developed through this study can be used to raise efficiency and lower toxicity when developing new therapy methods or when developing drugs with biological effects and that are disease specific," and added, "By providing important platform technologies in the drug carrying sector, it can raise the competitiveness of the domestic pharmaceutical industry by linking to the development of high value products in which various drug lines can be applied." Currently, the research team is engaged in studies for attaching substances that interact with specific proteins on the surface of cancer cells so that the nano-particles can be applied to just specific cancer cells. In December of last year, they developed 'pH Reacting Multi-layer Film Nano-Particle Drug Carriers' and published it in an internationally prominent academic journal in the bio-materials sector, <Acta Biomaterialia (IF=5.684)>, and has been actively carrying out research related to the development of nano-particle drug carriers.

Expected to resolve 'health risk' issue resulting from fine particles while welding Pursuing commercialization research with medical school in order to improve work environment and worker health Published in latest issue of world's most authoritative academic journal in the civil engineering and environment sector [2015-3-19] Department of Mechanical Engineering Byeon Jung-hoon (36) developed a new technology that can greatly reduce the toxicity of fine particles that occur during welding. This study, which was an international collaborative research together with Professor Jeffrey Roberts of Purdue University, Thomas Peters of the University of Iowa, and Dr. Park Jae-hong, was very meaningful in that it could reduce bodily harms of welding work, which is used widely in most heavy industries including ships and automobiles, as well as in mechanical industry sectors and small-scale construction sites. As it recently became known that fine particles emitted during welding causes bodily harm related to the respiratory system and that such fine particles can lead to Parkinson's disease, the issue of effectively managing fine particles rose. Currently, management of fine particles that occur while welding are mostly passive follow up measures such as mechanical ventilation of particles or filtering of it. Due to this, exposure and breathing of fine particles by workers is unavoidable, and there is no real solution to exposure in places without ventilation and filtering systems. In this study, however, Professor Byeon developed active treating technologies in this research that uses chitosan layers extracted from crustaceans such as crabs, crayfish and shrimp to immediately capsulate fine particles emitted while welding, or by adding bio-friendly substances such as chitosan gel or graphite on the welding rod to capsulate fine particles on site to reduce the toxicity of the particles. It is expected that the results of this study will be able to contribute widely in lowering harmful fine particles in the air from welding work in which workers are exposed to high concentration of fine particles deep within ships during shipbuilding or small-scale welding work in daily life. Professor Byeon Jeong-hoon said, "It is possible to minimize direct exposure to harmful substances even for workers when welding in areas that do not have mechanical ventilation and filtration facilities, so it will help improve the work environment as well as the workers' health." He added, "We are preparing further detailed research with the YU Medical School for commercialization of the research." This study titled 'Reducing the cytotoxicity of inhalable engineered nanoparticles via in situ passivation with biocompatible materials’ was revealed on the website of the world prominent <Journal of Hazardous Materials>, which is the top 0.8% in the civil engineering and environmental engineering sector, on the 12th, and it is scheduled to be published soon. Meanwhile, Professor Byeon Jung-hoon is currently actively conducting research such as publishing is research results on new technologies for light-reactive nano-substrate manufacturing processes, which is expected to be used ultra-small medical sensor or energy transformation materials in a globally prominent academic journal (top 7.6%) <Nanoscale> (IF, impact factor 6.739) in the nano-technology sector earlier in January of this year.

‘@Xpert’ club 'official' next-generation security leaders Top 10 in Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and Korean Information Technology Research Institute 'BoB Program' Cornerstone to enter information and security sectors such as the Korea Internet and Security Agency and the Financial Security Agency <Winning students and advisor of the next-generation security leader fostering program 'BoB 3' course> (from left to right - Kim Hyun-woo, Professor Lee Gi-dong, Moon Seok-joo) YU (President Noh Seok-kyun) was recognized as a cradle for national white hackers. Students of the Department of Computer Engineering (Dean Lee Gi-dong) participated in 'BoB (Best of the Best) 3', a next-generation security leader fostering program hosted by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (Minister Choi Yang-hee) and sponsored by the Korean Information Technology Research Institute (Director Yoo Joon-sang) and unveiled their talents as white hackers who can later be national treasures. The winners were Moon Seok-joo (24) and Kim Hyun-woo (23), both seniors in the Department of Computer Engineering. In the 'BoB 3 certification ceremony' held at Samjeong Hotel in Yeoksam-dong of Seoul on the 12th, Kim Hyun-woo was selected in the final top 10 and received a plaque and cash prize of 20 million won, while Moon Seok-joo was ranked in the top 31 to also win an award as they displayed their skills and capabilities as white hackers. This third BoB course that first began in 2012 was joined by 1,080 contestants including high school and college students majoring in computer and information security around the nation, and engaged in the fiercest competition yet. Participants turned in their applications to joint the program in May and participated in lectures, lab work and team activities for approximately eight months and carried out projects to solve difficult information security problems together with current security experts as their mentors. Of the 1,080 applicants, 130 were chosen as the third BoB program trainees after taking tests and going to interviews. They then worked on education and projects through group education and training for six months. After evaluating team and individual activities, as well as education course evaluations for the six month education period, the top 31 students were selected in December of last year. In the final two months, they used the knowledge the gained during the education to face off in a final competition after completing projects and advanced courses. In result, Kim Hyun-woo was placed in the final top 10 for his advanced project on finding weaknesses in national infrastructure such as subways and its security measures. Moon Seok-joo was not chosen in the final top 10, but was recognized for his creativity in projects and capacities in the information security sector and was awarded as well. Kim Hyun-woo said, "Going to study groups with friends from my department club helped a lot," and added, "I received a lot while engaging in club activities so I would like to return some of the 20 million won cash prize to my junior students," as he thanked members of his academic club. <Department of Computer Engineering '@Xpert' Club and Advisor Lee Gi-dong> Just as what Kim said, their skills were the result of not only their major as computer engineering students, but also through the information security club @Xpert that the department operates. Kim Hyun-woo and Moon Seok-joo, and one more student placed their names on the 130 student list of the 3rd BoB program. The BoB program is the top educational program joined by current prominent security experts and funded 100% by the government, so just being selected in this program is equivalent to be recognized for one's potential. @Xpert club is an academic club of the YU Department of Engineering voluntarily founded in September of 2005 by students who were interested in hacking and information security. Unlike other college clubs, the passion for research of students is as high as any other academic research organization. There is also a high level of interest among freshmen in information security so over 30 students knock on the doors to the club every year. However, because this club requires considerable levels of expertise and study capacities, only 20% continue with club activities. Kim Hyun-woo, who was placed in the top 10 in the 3rd BoB program, was also the 9th president of the club. Professor Lee Gi-dong (52), who is the advisor of the @Xpert club, said, "There are many places to use knowledge in the fields of information technology and security, so club activities naturally lead to employment. In addition to large conglomerates, many of the students who graduated joined specialized fields with the Korea Internet & Security Agency and the Financial Security Agency." He added, "I am very proud of the students who land good jobs or go on to study further at graduate schools as they choose their own career paths and strengthen their capacities and competitiveness."
