Nobel prize of the science information sector, with no winners from Asia yet Only Professor Park selected as candidate for this year from Korea Webometrics expert recognized for global research achievement [March 3, 2017] YU Department of Media and Communication Professor Park Han-woo (45) was selected as a candidate for the 'Derek de Solla Price' award, which is also known as the Nobel prize of the science information sector. There was no winner of the Derek de Solla Price award from Asia yet. A total of 33 people are candidates for this year's award, and among the 10 main candidates likely to be chosen as the winner, Professor Park is the only candidate from Asia. Professor Park is an expert in webometrics, which is on the quantitative analysis of the web, and big data sectors. Professor Park led the 'YU WCU Webometrics Project Team' that received government support since 2008, and has made outstanding research achievements such as publishing over a hundred theses in world acclaimed academic journals based on the theme of social network analysis through website contents and hyperlinks. In particular, upon analyzing the productivity, impact and collaboration of the 5,417 theses in the measurement informatics sector published in 75 countries since 1964 (1948-2012) in 2014, Professor Park was ranked 13th in the betweenness centrality rankings. Professor Park was recognized internationally for his achievements and has been active as an editor for the SSCI international academic journal 'Big Data & Society', 'Technological Forecasting & Social Change' and Scientometrics'. Professor Park earned his PhD at New York State University and constructed a wide ranging academic exchange network together with researchers of North America and Europe while working at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Oxford Internet Institute. After returning to Korea, he established a global academic society on the theme of 'Triple Helix', which is a new cooperative model of industry, academics and government. 'Derek de Solla Price' became known as the 'Father of Scientometrics' after investigating scientific knowledge production and citation structures through his book, 'Little Science, Big Science 1963) and 'Networks for Scientific Papers' carried in the world-acclaimed science journal 'Science' in 1965. Scientometrics is the 'science of science' that makes quantitative analysis on the production and development of academic fields based on the types and publications of researchers, and it contributed significantly in the birth of today's 'Big Data'. The 'Derek de Solla Price' award selected its first winner with Eugene Garfield of the US in 1984 for his contributions by establishing the science technology thesis citation index (SCI) database, and a total of 18 people received this award. The final winner of this year will be determined on March 15 through votes by past winners and editors of the international journal, 'Scientometrics'.

Dispatch students from July to receive field training at local companies in international commerce and finance for six months Agreements for exchange with Hong Kong Lingnan University for admissions of exchange students, language programs and cultural exchange programs [March 9, 2017] <YU and the Korean Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong signed an MOU to operate overseas field training programs.> (from left to right: YU External Cooperation Office Director Lee Hee-wook, Korean Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong Chairman Yoon Bong-hee) The global network of YU (President Sur Gil-soo) has expanded to Hong Kong, the central city of the international finance market and Asia's economy. Recently, YU visited the Korean Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, Lingnan University in Hong Kong, and local companies to discuss matters on operating overseas field training programs for students and on plans to promote exchange. First, YU External Cooperation Office Director Lee Hee-wook recently visited the Korean Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong to sign an MOU to pursue overseas field training programs for YU students. With this MOU, the Korean Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong will cooperate with YU in overseas field training planning, operation, finding and managing local companies, orientation, and adaptation support, while promising to provide full support so that YU students can participate in high quality overseas field training programs. The Korean Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong that was founded in May 1976 has over 200 member companies comprised of Korean companies located in Hong Kong and companies founded by Korean immigrants. It has been overseeing field training programs for Korean college students since 2014 and they are expected to provide significant help in YU students entering the global arena. YU is planning to send students for overseas field training to Hong Kong starting in July. The dispatched students will engage in field training for six months at local companies in various industries including international commerce, finance, law, management, accounting, media, PR, and restaurant industries. During this visit to Hong Kong, YU also discussed plans to promote exchange with Lingnan University in Hong Kong. Lingnan University is a public university that focuses on humanities and social sciences such as language, history, society and economy, and it is one of the top universities in Hong Kong for humanities. YU and Lingnan University discussed matters such as ▲approving admissions to exchange students recommended by the university ▲promotion of short-term language and cultural exchange programs, and ▲participation in international academic conferences. Personnel from Lingnan University will visit YU in April to discuss the detailed operation plans for this. In addition, YU agreed to operate internship programs linked with employment with 'SL Enterprise', a Hong Kong educational institute specializing in Korean language. YU President Sur Gil-soo said, "Overseas field training programs will not only improve the global capacity of students during enrollment, but also be an opportunity to broaden employment options by looking towards overseas markets as well." He added, "We will continue to expand global education programs so that YU students can be active in various fields both domestically and internationally."

The winners were Hwang Yoon-chan (24), Baek Joo-young (24), Lim Chang-oh (23), and Jang Sung-woo (23), who are all seniors majoring in trans-art at the YU School of Fine Arts. They received good reviews from participants with their 'lightweight bicycle frame' that they designed for this contest and made using a 3D printer. This contest is on creative idea products made with 3D printers, and the lightweight bicycle frame made by YU students has the advantage that it is possible to produce personalized and customized bicycle frames in a short period of time. Hwang Yoon-chan said, "The lightweight bicycle frame submitted for this contest can be made by anyone having 3D model designs and a 3D printer," and added, "Anyone can create customized products by applying blueprints if they know how to use 3D modeling programs." The 3D model blueprints for the lightweight bicycle frame they produced are shared in 'thingiverse (www.thingiverse.com)’, which is the most used blueprint sharing website in the world. 3D printing can be applied in various industries and everyday life including everyday commodities, medical, instruments, character industries including plastic figures, and artifact restoration industries. The 3D printing technology used in various fields is picked as one of the core technologies for the fourth industrial revolution that improves competitiveness through conversion technologies. YU School of Fine Arts Professor of Trans-Art Shin Gi-woon who advised the students said, "Compared to engineering majors who mainly deal with the hardware part of 3D printers, art majors who study figurative arts and produce various types of creative works have strengths in terms of software for designing the final piece." He added, "Trans-art majors were able to display their creativity by acquiring knowledge in various fields such as the traditional materials for sculptures, photographs, videos, figurative arts and designs."

The department judged that it would be possible to enhance the usefulness and value of design through close cooperation with the society and has been engaged in various volunteer activities through design. A representative case is the project worked on together with the Daegu Police Department. Starting in the second semester of 2014, the department worked with the Daegu Police Department and designed the bus station in front of the Daegu Police Department (photo below). In the first semester of 2015, classes were carried out on designing the outer wall of the Daegu Jungang Police Station (photo above)( and the graphic design for the outer wall of the Daegu Police Department. It was judged to have transformed the authoritative and rigid image of the police to a friendlier image, while improving the urban aesthetics and offering a source of entertainment for citizens, and thus received a certificate of appreciation from the Daegu Police Agency. In the second semester of 2016, it carried out development for package design for Punggukmyeon, a small and medium company in Daegu. Students who participated in the talent donation received a talent donation certificate from the Korean Intellectual Property Office, and the beneficiary company in response made donations through the Daegu Community Chest of Korea. Furthermore, ten small and medium companies having difficulties with pursuing design development were selected for design projects with exclusive teams. Another major project was the design element development project for the Bukseong-ro arts and manufacturing. Students examined the historical and cultural significance of the Bukseong-ro arts and manufacturing technicians to discover elements that could be integrated in design. During this process, students produced graphics and illustrated story books to share the history and value of Bukseong-ro in an easy and entertaining way. YU Departmant of Visual Communication Design Dean Jung Jae-wan said, "Design is connected with various fields including urban, environmental, communication and architecture, so a social role is necessary. From this perspective, we will go anywhere that needs design in the future."

Practical abilities ↑, Language skills ↑, Cultural experience, and school credits US Army in Korea internship program completion ceremony, joined by 53 people from 6 universities including YU 111 YU students joined internship since 2011 [February 10, 2017] <US Army base internship program completion ceremony> “This is an internship in Korea, but by working at a US military base, this is a 'four-in-one' program to raise practical abilities, English skills, global cultural experience, and even gain school credits. I strongly recommend this!" YU (President Sur Gil-soo) held the '2016 Second Semester US Army in Korea Internship Program' completion ceremony at the Cheonma Art Center Sapphire Hall from 1 p.m. on the 10th. The US Army in Korea internship program is a program for students to work as interns at US army bases located in the Yeongnam region to gain practical experiences. The commute is easy as interns can participate in the internship from their home in Korea, and is highly popular among students as it offers the opportunity to improve language skills and have cultural experiences while working with US military personnel and soldiers. Over 100 people participated in the ceremony including key figures from the US Army base such as Brigadier General John P. Sullivan of the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, and 53 students from six universities including 14 from YU received their certificate of completion. YU School of Materials Science and Engineering senior Jin Young-joo (22) who participated in this program said, "I took part in this program because I thought I would be able to improve my English while working as an intern," and added, "I worked at an elementary school at a US base. It was an opportunity to gain a better understanding on American culture. I would strongly recommend other students to also participate in internship programs at the US base." YU has been offering this as part of the overseas field experience program from 2011 and from 2013, seven universities including YU, Kyungpook National University, Keimyung University, Catholic University of Daegu, Daegu University, Daegu Haany University, and Pusan National University signed official MOUs with the US military bases to operate internship programs. YU students selected as interns worked at US military bases located in Daegu such as Camp Walker, Camp Henry, and Camp George. Participating students work for six months at the US Army bases and earn school credits (16-18 credits) as overseas field experience learning, as well as a small scholarship. YU President Sur Gil-soo said, "The US Army internship program is a very good program where students can reap the effects of overseas internship programs while staying in Korea." He added, "I hope that this acts as an opportunity for students to not only earn school credits, but also acquire various practical experiences in the field and improve global capacities through actual exchange with US soldiers and military personnel." Meanwhile, a total of 111 students participated in the US Army in Korea internship program since 2011, and eight students are scheduled to participate in the internship for the first semester of 2017.

The colleges, two professional graduate schools such as the School of Medicine and Law School, and nine special graduate schools such as the Graduate School of Business Administration, Public Administration, Environment & Public Health Studies, Sports Science, Clinical Pharmacy, Education, Engineering, Arts & Design, and the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul also held their individual graduation ceremonies. 3,901 bachelors, 656 masters and 94 PhDs received their degrees at YU on this day. YU President Sur Gil-soo, Graduate School Dean Lee Tae-jin and Yeungnam Education Foundation Director Lee Cheon-soo attended the graduation ceremony to congratulate the graduating students. Mr. Sur said at the graduating dinner, "I would like to congratulate you on earning your honorable degrees through your great efforts over several years on behalf of YU." He added, "Graduation is not the end. It is a new beginning to a different world. By taking on the challenges with noble ideals and visions, I am confident that you will be the masters of the future." In particular, 254 international students (28 bachelors', 210 masters', 16 PhDs) received their diplomas including Mr. Gholami Farkoush Saeid (33) from Iran who majored in electric engineering, and 390 undergraduates who graduated received dual diplomas.

64 winners in the professional and creative sectors Award winners in domestic and international contests, 1st place in international academic conference, publication in SCI international journals, passing certified appraiser and customs broker exams during enrollment, and other 'Y-Type Human Resources' in various fields [February 23, 2017] <2016 Second Half Y-Type Human Resources Award Ceremony> YU (President Sur Gil-soo) held the 2016 second half 'Y-Type Human Resources' awards. This was organized to congratulate students who participated in national and international contests in the second half of 2016 or who published papers in SCI-level international journals as main authors. 'Y-Type Human Resources' are the ideal human resources pursued by YU and refers to human resources with both creativity and progressiveness based on character. At this award ceremony held at the YU Cheonma Art Center Sapphire Hall at 3 p.m. on the 23rd, a total of 64 students won the Y-Type Human Resource Award including 16 individual awards and four teams (48 students) for group awards. YU students took first place in various domestic and foreign contests from July to December last year receiving the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award and the Minister of Employment and Labor Award, while also being recognized for their expertise and creativity in various fields by taking first place in international academic conferences and publishing their research in SCI international journals. In particular, Min Ji-hoon (25), who is planning to enroll in the YU Graduate School (School of Materials Science and Engineering), received attention by taking first place in an international academic conference joined by master's and PhD researchers from around the world in 2016 as an undergraduate when he was a senior. Min participated in ‘IPMC 2016 (International Process Metallurgy Conference 2016)’, an international conference on metals joined by over 200 master's and PhD researchers from around the world including Indonesia, Canada, Singapore and Finland, and took first place in the poster session showing the results of over 100 studies. Most of the participants are master's and PhD level researchers, and it is very rare for an undergraduate to win the award. The School of Mechanical Engineering club 'YUSAE' that took overall first place in the Baja SAE KOREA at Yeungnam University 2016 and the School of International Economics and Business' 'International Economics Research Society' that won the grand prize for the second consecutive year in the '2016 College Student Trade Remedy Contest' were selected for group awards and therefore won the Y-Type Human Resource Award. Also, Lee Dae-ha (24), a junior in the School of International Economics and Business who passed the certified appraiser examination as a student, Lee Jae-hyung (24, scheduled to enroll in graduate school) in the School of Chemistry who was recognized for his research capacities by publishing two studies in SCI international academic journals as a senior, and Lim Da-ye (22) in the College of Music (major in orchestra) who won first place in the '13th National Orchestra Concours' were also selected as the 2016 Y-Type Human Resources after being recognized for their outstanding capacities in their respective majors. YU President Sur Gil-soo awarded each student personally and said, "I am very proud of our students who displayed their abilities in their fields and received recognition for their abilities." He added, "YU will provide full support so that the Y-type human resources of YU equipped with professionalism and creativity based on character can become global leaders of the world."

Analysis of data released by the college information website, 'Academy Info' Thesis performance per full-time professor in ‘SCI/SCOPUS international thesis performance’ 4th in nation Many theses with excellent quality [February 20, 2017] The thesis performance per professor at the YU School of Medicine (Dean Kim Jong-yeon) was found to be fourth in the nation. Recently, Medical Times analyzed the thesis performance of medical schools (excluding pre-med) released on the college information website, 'Academy Info'. Upon examining the 'SCI/SCOPUS international thesis performance' per medical school throughout the nation, it was found that the thesis performance per full-time professor at the YU School of Medicine was 0.9238, which equates to fourth in the nation. The thesis performance per full-time professor was highest at Seoul National University Medical School at 1.5337, followed by Yonsei University Medical School at 1.2748 and Sungkyunkwan University at 1.0897. The top three were all universities in Seoul, and YU placed fourth out of the 45 medical schools (including professional medical graduate schools) throughout the nation. The fact that the SCI-level international thesis performance per professor is high means that the actual research results of professors were excellent and that many papers with high levels of quality were written. YU President Sur Gil-soo said, "This demonstrates that the capacities of YU professors is of the highest level in Korea," while adding, "We will provide full support so that our university can be at the highest level in Korea in terms of both research and education."

Mr. Sur earned his bachelor's in engineering at Seoul National University and his master's and PhD at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and served as a professor of YU from March 1978. He served in a number of major posts at YU including the vice-president of education, president of the external cooperation department, director of the education support office, and director of the industry-academic research office. Outside of YU he served as the vice-chairman of the Polymer Society of Korea, regional director of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk branch of the Polymer Society of Korea, and academic director of the Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry. YU President Sur said, "I feel a great sense of responsibility and duty by taking on this important position as the university president at the 70th year anniversary of YU." He added, "Recently, the university society is faced with an unprecedented crisis. There is a growing interest throughout society on the operation and finances of universities, and all universities in Korea are now in an age of unlimited competition for survival. To construct industry-academic-research cooperation system and promote the industry in the photovoltaic sector Recently recognized for abilities externally such as being appointed as the MD of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy Strategy Planning Team [February 6, 2017] School of Chemical Engineering Professor Park Jin-ho (58) was appointed as the fourth chairperson of the Korea Photovoltaic Society. His term is for one year until the end of this year. The Korea Photovoltaic Society was established in 2012 for the purpose of constructing an industry-academic-research cooperation system in the photovoltaic sector, which is a core technology among the 11 renewable energy sectors, as well as to promote R&D, technology transfers and relevant industries through academic activities. The society engages in projects such as the investigation, collection, research and exchange of academic materials, publication and distribution of academic magazines, hosting of academic conferences, academic exchange with related domestic and foreign institutes, industry-academic cooperation with national public institutes and other agencies, and development of policies for the development of the photovoltaic industry. Professor Park earned his PhD at the University of Florida in the US and is currently serving as a professor at the YU School of Chemical Engineering since September 1994. Professor Park was recently recognized for his capacities outside of the university by being appointed as the MD (managing director) of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's strategic planning team for a three-year term. There are nine energy PDs (program director) under the MD and the MD in in charge of managing the appointed PDs and establishing technology policies to supplement the lacking technological expertise of the officers. In 2015, Professor Park was selected as a regular member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea, and is currently the government's 'future growth engine task force team' new renewable energy hybrid system task force team, the IEA (International Energy Agency) PVPS (Photovoltaic Power Systems Task 1 Korea representative, international cooperation department chairman and senior vice-chairman of the Korea Photovoltaic Society, and photovoltaic PD of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy (currently Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy). Professor Park received the '24th Excellent Science Technology Paper Award' from the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Studies, and in 2013, he was awarded the 'Seokmyeong Excellent Chemist Award' from the Korean Institute of Chemical Engineers, which is Korea's top association in the chemical engineering sector.
