YU and other 5 regional universities, and Gyeongbuk province co-operated training programs for international students. Targeting foreign students, Gyeongbuk Provided training opportunities to experience the manifestation of Four Gyeongbuk spirits [September 19, 2018] Five universities including YU (Yeungnam University, Daegu Catholic University, Daegu Haany University, Kyungil University, Daeshin University) have concluded an agreement with Gyeongsangbuk province and Korea National Education Promotion Agency to conduct training programs for foreign students. Furthermore, they decided to make a joint effort to globalize the four spirits of Gyeongbuk and interchange human and physical resources for the operation of the training programs. Gyeongbuk province, as Korea’s excellent cultural manifestation, has established the village spirit of Hwarang, Seonbi, Hoguk, and Saemaeul as the identity of Gyeongbuk province, and has been spreaded to adolescents and providential residents. With the signing of the agreement, we can anticipate the globalization of the excellent regional culture to be one step closer as the range has expanded to the foreign students at the 5 universities in the city. The 'Global New Gyeongbuk people Training program' will be held once to twice for one night and two days in the next month. Through this training, foreign students will visit the main attractions of Gyeongsangbuk province, and have an opportunity to experience the cultural heritage of traditional culture. Lee Chul-woo, who visited YU to sign this agreement, said, "The region's excellent cultural heritage can lead to the creation of local culture and tourism jobs as well as attracting tourists." With the conclusion of this agreement with local universities, the universities and the local government will grow together and further contribute to the development of the region."

Won First-Place in the Traditional culture design contest that professional designers and the general public attended ‘Talking Hangul in the life of the common people'. designed by incorporating the cultural life of common people and Hangul [September 20, 2018] Jin Joo-Min, a student in the Department of Visual Design at Yeungnam University (20 yrs old, pictured above), received a grand prize in the field of Traditional Contemporary Design in the 2018 Gyeongbuk National Cultural Contents Competition. As the 20th year of Traditional Contemporary Design contest, A total of 365 entries were accepted from May 1 to June 1, and a total of 11 works were selected as winners after final screening. Amongst them, Jin’s work was selected as the first place. Jin's work is 'Talking Hangul in the life of the common people'. This work is characterized by combining the aesthetic beauty of Hangul and the tile house, which is a unique and traditional type of residence in Korea, and the cultures and characteristics of ordinary people such as traditional plays, festivals and samulnori. Jin said, "I have always been proud of the Hangul, which Sejong has created with an amiable spirit. I wanted to combine the design with the shape and the design of the Korean language because it is very beautiful." "The basic design is based on various patterns that remind us of Hangul in our ordinary life and traditional culture, and I made application patterns based on these basic designs.” In particular, the contest not only includes college students but also professional designers as well as the general public from the whole country, and Jin won first place as a second-year in college. YU Chunma Art Center sponsorship fund Launch of cultural performances including domestic and international performances such as China and Austria Taking initiative in spreading cultural performances such as invited performances in China and Austria as well as performances for the underprivileged [September 21, 2018] Youth Choir ‘Chunma Youth Choir (leader Park Mi-ok) decided to donate KRW 50 million to YU as the development fund. On the 21st, at 2 pm, four members of the Chunma Youth Choir including the director Park Mi-ok, the co-conductor Kim Mi-kyung, and 4 other Choir members visited YU and announced that they would donate 50 million won to the president Sur Gil-soo to sponsor the Chunma Art Center. Director Park said, "Since the opening ceremony at Yeonnam University's Chunma Art Center in 2012, I have been performing with YU for many times at the Chunma Art Center. I hope YU and Chunma Youth Choir will continue to plan and perform various performances for the development of local cultural performances in the future." The Chunma Youth Choir is a youth choir founded in June of 2012 to lead local cultural performances with youths who are the future leaders in the slogan 'Dream, Love, Vision and Peace'. The choir has been recognized for their solid performance as they received the ‘Gold Prize (1st place)’ in the 2017 Nationwide Daegu World Chorus Festival chorus contest, and the Grand Prize in the 20th National Environment Song Chorus in the section for all elementary, middle, and high school combined. They are also taking the initiative in spreading cultural performances in all levels, domestically and internationally, including regular concerts, invited performances in China and Austria, as well as concerts for the underprivileged and hospitality performances.

Defeated Dongguk University 4-3 in finals Tops President’s Tournament for the first time 15 years since the 37th tournament in 2003 Lee Sang-dong wins MVP and Park Tae-ho the ‘Best Coach Award’ [August 30, 2018] YU raised the victory cup at the 52nd President’s National College Baseball Tournament. The YU baseball team (Coach Park Tae-ho) defeated Dongguk University 4-3 in the finals of the 52nd President’s National College Baseball Tournament held at the Suncheon Baseball Field on the 30th to stand at the apex of college baseball. Since winning the 37th tournament back in 2003, YU finally regained the throne after 15 years. In this game, YU took a four-zero lead from the first inning, easily taking the lead. Dongguk University fought back and made it a one run game in the 7th inning, but YU’s starting pitcher Lee Sang-min (22, Sports Science, senior) who gave up one run in 3.1 innings and the second picture Lee Sang-dong (22, Special Physical Education, senior) also pitched a great game to hold on to the one run lead to the end. <YU Baseball Team Coach Park Tae-ho (left) who won the Best Coach Award and Lee Sang-dong who received the MVP Award at the 52nd President’s National College Baseball Tournament> In particular, Lee Sang-dong, who stepped up to the mound as the second pitcher for YU, helped his team take the victory by giving up three hits, four walks and two runs, while recording five strike-outs in 5. 1 innings. In this tournament, Lee Sang-dong pitched in three games up until the quarterfinals recording three hits, two walks, 16 strike-outs and an ERA of 0 for 11 innings. He did his role in the most decisive situation in the finals with Dongguk University and was thus selected as the MVP. Lee Sang-dong was also recently selected as a member for the 2nd U-23 Baseball World Cup and has been recognized as one of the most prospective players among college athletes. Coach Park Tae-ho said, “It is exciting to win the President’s college baseball tournament this year since winning the President’s high school baseball tournament back in 2003. We were able to achieve this feat because the athletes took on a sense of responsibility and gave it their best in each match.” He added, “We will now compete in the college baseball U-League Championships from September. We will keep doing our best so that we can continue our winning streak.” Coach Park Tae-ho who led YU to victory won the Best Coach Award, while Lee Sang-dong won the MVP and Lee Sang-min the ‘Pitcher Award’, Kim Min-seok (21, Sports Science, junior) won the ‘Defense Award’, Park Jung-min (21, Special Physical Education, junior) won the RBI award (10 RBIs) and Steals award (5), and Kang Sung-jae (21, Sports Science, junior) ranked second place at batting by recording a batting average of .563. The YU Student Affairs Office Director Kang Seok-bong won the Merit Award.

65th Class of the School of Architecture held Graduation Exhibition at the Cheonma Art Center Gallery from the 4th to 7th 145 participants from architecture, architectural engineering and architectural design majors Largest graduation exhibition in the nation... Combined knowledge and creativity for high quality exhibits [September 6, 2018] <YU President Sur Gil-soo giving congratulatory address at the 65th Architecture Graduation Exhibition> The YU School of Architecture held its 65 Graduation Exhibition. This graduation exhibition that was held at the basement gallery of the YU Cheonma Art Center on September 4 was joined by 145 students in the three majors of architecture, architectural engineering and architectural design. The graduation exhibition of the YU School of Architecture was the largest in Korean universities and was judged to be of the highest caliber in terms of the quality of works. At this exhibit, students of the YU School of Architecture presented futuristic architecture that could be used in various fields based on their knowledge and experience in their majors, while also putting on exhibits their works and discourses that give a glimpse into the future of architecture. In particular, the ‘2020 YU EXPO PAVILION’ project, which was the outcome of a workshop that students worked on during the summer break, was introduced at the entrance. It attracted huge interest from visitors by proposing nonlinear structures at Cheonmaro using advanced design software, 3D printers and VR technologies. At the opening ceremony on the 4th, YU President Sur Gil-soo, School of Architecture Alumni Association Chairman Kim Cheol-gyu and heads of architectural organizations of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region and other important figures attended the event to encourage the students. This exhibition will be held until the 7th. YU School of Architecture Dean Kwon Jong-wook said, “Students combined the knowledge they learned from studying in their majors for several years with creativity, and thus the quality of the works are improving by the year. I am convinced that such achievements will also be useful in their professional careers after graduation.” Meanwhile, in addition to the graduation exhibition, the YU School of Architecture has been hosting the ‘30th Alumni Anniversary Event’ during the same time every year. This year, alumni from the class of ‘88 working around the nation visited YU and made a donation to the development fund. They gave scholarships to their juniors at YU and spared no efforts in giving professional advice following graduation.

Produced ‘citizen safety’ video together with the Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency and Gyeongsan Police Station Video Club REC made a total of three videos including the illegal filming prevention video ‘The Third Eye’ Received certification of appreciation from the Gyeongsan Police Station [September 3, 2018] YU students became guardians of the safety of local residents. The video club, REC (Recording Essential Crew) comprised of students in the YU Department of Media and Communication and the Department of Visual Communication Design produced videos together with the Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency and the Gyeongsan Police Station to promote community safety and police activities. REC produced a total of three videos from last year to July of this year at the request of Gyeongsan Police Station. The first video produced in the summer of last year was titled ‘The Third Eye’ made to prevent illegal filming. As illegal filming became a huge social issue in the past few years, the video produced at the time drew a lot of attention. ‘The Third Eye’ is a one minute film depicting illegal filming that occurs at subway stations, rest rooms and locker rooms, and punishment for such actions. This was produced to raise social awareness that sometimes view illegal filming as a simple joke. <YU Video Club REC> The second video was titled ‘Gyeongsan Sheriff’. This video shares information on the crime-prevention facilities installed for the safety of the community by Gyeongsan Police Station such as Eagle Security Lamp and crime-prevention mirrors. It promotes crime-prevention facilities that citizens may not have known about, while also giving information on practical ways to use the crime-prevention facilities in the case of emergencies in the four-minute video. The most recently produced third video is titled ‘Register Desired Patrol’ that promotes the ‘flexible patrol’ service. This video shares information with the community on the ‘flexible patrol’ service provided when a resident requests patrol at a desired time and place, the police patrols that area at the requested time. This video is currently being aired at the Gyeongsan Lotte Cinema before movies are screened. The REC Club students recently received a certificate of appreciation from the Gyeongsan Police Station. It was a recognition for helping with the safety of the community and residents as members of the community. Kim Wan-gyu (22, Department of Media and Communication, senior), who is the president of the REC Club said, “We had fun producing the videos as part of our club activities, and it was a pleasant surprise to receive this certificate of appreciation.” He added, “If we are given the opportunity, we would like to produce more public benefit videos.”

Pucheon Chairman Lee Si-won recognized for his contributions to the development of the university Department of Commercial Science (Business Administration) class of ‘63 alumni... Commerce and Economics Hall Room 209 named ’Lee Si-won Lecture Room’ Founded fibers company and developed into a global fiber company, received honorary PhD in business administration [September 5, 2018] <The ‘Lee Si-won Lecture Room’ named after the chairperson of Pucheon Co. was opened at the Commerce and Economics Hall Room 209> With the start of the second semester, YU (President Sur Gil-soo) opened the ‘Lee Si-won Lecture Room’ named after Pucheon Chairman, Lee Si-won (73). It aims at honoring his contributions to the development of the Korean economy and the growth of the university. In the afternoon of the 5th, YU held a name plate hanging ceremony for the ‘Lee Si-won Lecture Room’ at room 209 of the YU Commerce and Economics Hall. Next to it is a brass plate with an engraving of Mr. Lee’s face and his major achievements. Chairman Lee, who was from the class of ‘63 at the YU (formerly Daegu University) Department of Commercial Science (currently Dep. of Business Administration) graduated in 1967 and worked in the fibers industry for over 50 years and is a living witness to the history of fibers and textiles in Korea. Mr. Lee founded Pucheon in 1975 and developed it into a fibers company recognized globally for its quality. In honor of his excellent abilities as a businessman, he received an honorary PhD from YU in April of last year. He donated a total of 530 million won including scholarships for his juniors at YU continuing on his selfless support for his alma mater and juniors. Mr. Lee said, “I received an honorary PhD from YU in April and now I even have a lecture room named after me. It is a great honor.” He added, “As a businessman who graduated from YU, I will work harder to contribute in the development of Korea and to become a respected businessman who serves the community.” YU President Sur Gil-soo said, “Students who come to the lecture room for classes will later contribute to society following the tracks of their senior and become a leader of Korea.” He added, “I hope that students who study at the Lee Si-won lecture room will become the second and third Lee Si-won in the future and so later have lecture rooms named after them at YU later.” Meanwhile, YU has been making lecture rooms for those who donate to the development fund to honor the social contribution activities and will of big donators to the college development fund and to spread the culture of donating.

Graduation ceremony at the Cheonma Art Center Chamber Hall at 10:30 a.m. on the 22nd 58 PhDs, 384 masters’ and 1,128 bachelors’ degrees [August 22, 2018] YU (President Sur Gil-soo) held a graduation ceremony for the second semester of the 2017 school year at the Cheonma Art Center Chamber Hall at 10:30 a.m. on the 22nd. A total of 1,128 students earned their bachelor’s degree, 384 their master’s degree and 58 their PhD, and among them, 147 international students also received their diplomas (41 bachelors, 91 masters, 15 PhDs). YU President Sur Gil-soo, Graduate School Dean Lee Tae-jin and many professors and faculty attended the graduation ceremony to congratulate the students. YU President Sur Gil-soo said, “I would like to applaud the graduates on receiving your honorable diplomas after years of hard work.” He added, “You are now standing on a new start line. I hope that you become a proud member of society and do all that you can in your fields and become leaders of the future of Korea.”

Up to 2.7 billion won in national funding for three years Industry-Academic Cooperation Team selects 80 engineering graduates every year to operate project for up to three years Gain lab knowledge and work experience and understand corporate technology needs... Helps with employment and start-ups [August 16, 2018] YU was selected for the ‘2018 Youth TLO (Technology Licensing Office)’ fostering project overseen by the Ministry of Science and ICT. The ‘Youth TLO Fostering Project’ aims at providing work for youths who graduated from engineering and science majors at industry-academic cooperation team technology licensing organizations (TLO, industry-academic cooperation team researcher) to help prepare for employment or start-ups. By being selected for this project, YU will receive 900 million won every year starting this for up to three years for a total of 2.7 billion won and thus select up to 80 people for the TLO every year. <YU participating in the 1st Southeast Region Tech-Biz Conference> This year, the project will employ a total of 4,000 people from 67 colleges in six regions nationwide such as the Seoul region, Chungcheong region, Gangwon region, Daegyeong region, and Honam region as TLO. TLO work in technical marketing activities such as drafting tech brochures, finding companies with potential demand, hosting tech seminars, etc. for transferring technologies possessed by universities to the private sector, as well as lab researcher cooperation and science technology-based start-up activities. The YU Industry-Academic Cooperation Team is planning to operate various programs together with relevant departments such as the school’s employment and start-up support departments not only for the employment and start-ups of graduates of science and engineering majors, but also to improve commercialization of the outstanding technologies possessed by the university. YU Industry-Academic Cooperation Team Director Park Yong-wan said, “Through the youth TLO fostering project, science and engineering students can gain knowledge and work experience regarding lab technologies within the university and by enhancing their understanding on the technological needs of companies, it will help the considerably in preparing for employment or starting up businesses.”
