There are still problems in the history between Korea and Japan, and I was happy to provide a stepping stone, however weak, for the proper research on history.\" <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_021561432372141054 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-05-27_19-07-34_495.jpg\" target=_blank> A Japanese person, who came to Korea to trace the footsteps of the ancient kingdom of Baekje, which is being forgotten by Koreans, earned a master\'s in Korean history. Okasa Wako (64, photo) earned her master\'s degree after completing her studies abroad, which she started at the age of 62, at the 59th graduation ceremony of Yeungnam University. She attended the ceremony wearing a hanbok that her guidance professor Kim, Jung-sook gave her as a present and showed her affection for Korea stating, \"When I first started studying ancient history in Korea, I was shocked how different things were interpreted between Korea and Japan. However, the further I studied I realized that the history of exchange between the two countries was very old, and that the two nations were very close. The Hallyu phenomena in Japan was no coincidence.\" The title of her master\'s degree thesis was \'A Study on Baekje King Shrine\'. She was a teacher at an elementary school for 38 years in Osaka, and she always had a question on why the shrine that she frequently visited with her young students was still named \'Baekje King Shrine\'. The Baekje King Shrine is a shrine for King Gyeonbok, who was the grandson of King Uija, the last king of Baekje, and the shrine is in Hirakata city, Osaka until now. King Gyeongbok came to Japan in the mid 8th century and became the viceroy of this area for helping the Japanese emperor Sungmoo, who was the japanese emperor at that time. Then, in 2000 when beginning interchange with elementary school teachers of Daegu, she became even more interested in Korean-Japanese relations and finally in March 2006, she retired as a teacher and came to Korea in November of the same year as a student. She started a new life after her sixty year life. At the time, her Korean skills was in infancy so she first started at the Yeungnam University Korean Language Institute. For 15 months she concentrated on studying Korean. At the same time, she prepared a study plan for entering graduate school and went to Professor Kim, Jung-sook of the Department of Korean History to explain why she wanted to enroll in graduate school. Finally, she passed Test of Proficiency in Korean and in March 2008, enrolled in Yeungnam University Graduate School of Korean History. She then started to travel between Korea and Japan to begin her studies on the \'Baekje King Shrine\'. In order to answer her questions on why and how the Baekje King Shrine became worshipped by Japanese for over a millenium, she studied Japanese historical materials such as <Kojiki>, <Nihon Shoki> and <Shoku Nihongi>, and other historical records of the \'Baekje King Shrine\'. In results, she found that the Baekje King Shrine became localized through the integration of the culture of royalty and Buddhism of Baekje with the folk religions of Japan, and claimed that it was historical evidence that the spiritual and cultural roots of Japan could be derived from Korea. <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_08338136254200127 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-05-27_19-08-04_495.jpg\" target=_blank> Together with Professor Kim, Jung-sook (right) of the Department of Korean History She now plans to return to Japan and help her pregnant daughter, and she stated \"Korean parents sacrificed everything for their children and the children grew up and either took care of their parents or at least visited their parents frequently, showing that they had close relations unlike Japan. Children from multi-cultural families that entered elementary school has grown from 900 two years ago to 2,700 this year. It is predicted that if educational gaps and cultural conflicts which multi-cultural families and their children are suffered are neglected, it will become a big social issue in the future. Accordingly, Yeungnam University (president Lee, Hyo-soo) has stepped up to help the children of multi-cultural families who are marginalized both socially and culturally. The university mentors will receive educational volunteer service credits and work-study scholarships. 100 mentees will be selected from elementary school students of the lower income bracket among multi-cultural families residing in Gyeongsangbuk-do. The university mentors will help children in areas of their weakness and motivate their will to study, and will act as big sisters and brothers who can talk with and consult the children on their difficulties in school life. At this signing ceremony, Kwak, Chang-hoon (24, male), a sophomore in the Yeungnam University Department of Sociology, represented the mentors and made a speech saying \"There should be no children who are socially discriminated and alienated because of their difference in color and appearance,\" and added \"I hope to be their big brother and always help them to be warmly welcomed in the Korean society.\" Yeungnam University expects to help multi-cultural family children who are facing difficulties in their school lives. In the case of multi-cultural families, because mothers who are not perfect in Korean nurtures the children, they have lack of Korean language abilities making it difficult to adapt to school life. It also has a world-class research lab in the RFID (electronic tags) sector. It is a sister school with Yeungnam University that has conducted academic exchange from October 2004, and also has a student exchange program since 2006. Yeungnam University expects that this visit will further promote academic exchange and student/professor exchange between the two universities, while establishing a bridgehead for expanding exchange with other universities of Australia. Lee is also pursuing establishing sister relationships with Monash University and the University of Melbourne during this visit. Monash University (photo below) is a prestigious school that is ranked in the top 50 world universities, and its MBA program is ranked 1st in Australia and 2nd in Asia. The Personal Development MBA program is ranked second in the world. Furthermore, its biomedicine sector is ranked 37th in the world, and its engineering & information technology sector is also ranked in the top 20 of the world. The University of Melbourne is also a globally renowned school being ranked 36th in the 2009 world university evaluation. Recently, it has focused investments in bio-engineering. It is scheduled to come up with funds amounting to 100 million dollars to purchase high-tech materials for the bio-engineering field, and it also recruits Peter Doherty (immunology) and Bill Hess (microbiology, immunology), who are world famous professors in the biomedicine sector. The University of Melbourne is aiming to become a world-class university in the bio-engineering sector with the help of such faculty. It has also began world-class research on the fusion sector recently. Of course, it is receiving research funding by the government. Yeungnam University is also pursuing the \'Global Frontier 10-3-10\' strategy to become the top 10 in the world for 3 areas within 10 years, through the research on fusion technologies, and thus it is expected that cooperation across the Pacific between the two universities will result in great synergy effects. This is the third overseas education program that started in 2008. Medical school students received clinical training in the division of infectious diseases, division of pulmonology, neurosurgery, and radiology at a university hospital in the US. This hospital is the third largest in Florida and the 9th largest in the US. Its medical sector is especially famous and is said to be the best among US universities for research and treatment on cancer and dementia. Students who returned from their program at the US university hospital talked about the level of medical school in the US. ◆Treatment took at least 30 minutes <P style=\"FLOAT: right; WIDTH: 312px; POSITION: relative; HEIGHT: 265px\"> ▲Yeungnam University Medical School students who completed their training at university hospitals in the US stated that there was basically no difference in the level of medical care between Daegu university hospitals and that of the US. Kim, Dong-han (23, junior, Yeungnam University College of Medicine) always wanted to experience university hospitals in the US and so he applied to the education program. Unlike Korea, the US has patients with various diseases. There were an especially high number of patients with AIDS and persons with gunshot wounds, which are not easy to come by in Korea. There were also many patients with high obesity weighing 200 to 300 kilograms. Kim stated, \"It was interesting to see patients and diseases that I only saw in books.\" Kim was surprised to see that 1 doctor would see 1 patient for at least 30 minutes. 1 doctor would only tend to about 20 patients per day. It is something that only Korean doctors, who tend to 40 patients in the morning alone, would highly desire. Kim stated, \"medical textbooks say that a reason for failure of treatment is because patients do not follow the instructions of doctors,\" and added \"it seems that the success rate for treatment is higher because of the intimate relationship between patients and doctors in the US.\" Just as he heard, medical expenses in the US was expensive. It cost 1,500 dollars for MRIs in the US. It is double or triple the amount of Korea. \"In a movie that critized the US medical policies, I saw a patient who lost his finger unable to receive surgery because of the high medical expenses. However, they do provide essential treatments regardless of the medical expenses even for people in poverty.\" Baek, Jong-yoon (24, junior, Yeungnam University College of Medicine) said that he was impressed to see that hospital rooms in the US was mostly made for 1 to 2 people. This is because many people share one room in Korea. There are partitions even for intensive-care rooms in the US. The fact that surgery departments were not popular while dermatology and plastic surgery was popular just like Korea also caught his attention. Baek stated, \"Just like Korea, applicants rushed towards certain departments in the US, but unlike Korea which has 4 year residency terms uniformly, the US had different terms for residencies depending on the department.\" Na, Ho-dong (23, junior, Yeungnam University College of Medicine) wanted to see for himself the US hospitals that he only saw in TV and movies. Na experienced surgery and outpatients at five departments including the surgery department, division of infectious diseases, and division of pulmonology. He was especially amazed at patients with gunshot wounds. However, while experiencing the medical system of the US, he felt that Korea\'s medical standards were very high. Na stated, \"I thought medicine in the US would be outstanding compared to the rest of the world, but after experiencing it for myself, it seems similar with that of the university hospitals of Daegu.\" ◆Medical standards similar with Korea Lee, Dong-gyu (25, Yeungnam University Hospital intern) went for training at a US university hospital three years ago. Lee was impressed with American doctors treating patients like their friends. Lee stated, \"The relationship between doctors and patients who made small talk aside from medical issues seemed very comfortable.\" Lee was also envious of the emergency room system of the US. Like Korea, US emergency rooms gave highest priority to myocardial infarction and strokes. However, the US provided concentrated treatment for patients with myocardial infarction or strokes in a separate room. Lee stated, \"The emergency patient treatment system is more advanced than that of Korea.\" However, he did not feel that the medical standards of Korea fell behind the US. Lee is confident that at least for radiology, Korea is more advanced than the US. Lee stated, \"Korea subdivides radiology in different divisions such as nuclear medicine, but the US does not,\" and also added \"Because MRI and CT is expensive in the US, people do not get them, and thus, their ability to make diagnosis falls behind Korea.\" He also stated that the level for surgery was similar in the two countries. \"It hurts to see that patients living in local areas prefer hospitals in Seoul and abroad. After experiencing the medical standards of the US, there was no difference in the skill level. That is why I decided to stay in Daegu for my internship rather than going to Seoul.\"

<BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\"> Professor Kim, Jong-joo\'s team of the School of Biotechnology discovered the comprehensive DNA information of Hanwoo (Korean native cattle) through genome ciphering Procured source technology information for distinguishing Hanwoo quality and improving productivity [Jan 28, 2010] In order to enhance the competitiveness of our livestock industry in this age of unlimited competition evoked by the signing of the FTA, development of original technologies are more important now than ever, and the green light has been turned on for product distinguishing and productivity improvement for sustained development and assurance of competitiveness for the Hanwoo industry. Recently, Professor Kim, Jong-joo (43, School of Biotechnology) of Yeungnam University became the first in the world to cipher the genetic sequencing of Hanwoo genomes, and thus discovered 3.1 million SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism). <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_06615741764474274 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-04-21_09-15-07_495.jpg\" target=_blank> Pioneers in Hanwoo genome research (From left to right, Choi, Nam-woo, CEO of Insilicogen, Professor Kim, Jong-joo of Yeungnam university, Professor Kim, Gwan-seok of Chungbuk National University, Myung, Hyun-goon, CEO of Solgent) According to this, as the results of the industry-academic joint research conducted by Professors Kim, Nae-soo and Kim, Gwan-seok of Chungbuk National University, and Insilicogen and Solgent, with the support of the Korea Institute of Planning and Evaluation For Technology of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (director Jeong, Seung), it has decoded the Hanwoo DNA sequence that corresponds to 92% of the standard sequence of cattle registered in the US National Center of Biological Information (NCBI). In addition, Professor Kim\'s team discovered approximately 3.1 million SNP and Indels within the Hanwoo genome sequence. Of them 28% were already revealed in tests and overlaps with the NCBI cattle that were registered in the database for SNP (dbSNP). However, 72% of the SNP were newly revealed. Thus, it is expected that it will provide basic information for research on various genetic changes for other types of cows as well. In the case of humans, SNP contains not only the genetic information that determines individual characters such as figure, body type and temperament, but also contains genetic information that is the basis of genetic diseases such as cancer and hypertension. Thus, it can be said that studies on SNP will be critical for treating customized genetic diseases and developing new medicines. Likewise, sufficient research on Hanwoo SNP must first take place in order to conduct studies on the diseases and economic traits (breeding, growth, meat quality) of Hanwoo, and for conducting grading of Hanwoo and using production history systems. However, only a few dozen SNPs were used in related research until now, and the main reason for this is because the discovery of SNPs in Hanwoo genomes was very limited. Thus, by discovering almost all the SNP in Hanwoo genomes, it is expected to greatly contribute in revealing the genetic secrets of Hanwoo. Furthermore, it is expected to ▲ define the genes related to the breeding, growth and meat quality of Hanwoo so to greatly contribute in the productivity of Hanwoo, ▲ provide basic genetic information in picking out beef, containing the high quality meat and wellbeing elements (unsaturated fatty acid contents, low-cholesterol, CLA, etc) that consumers want, ▲ improving Hanwoo that can be utilized for prevention of global warming and for green growth business by defining genes that can enhance the feed efficiency of Hanwoo and reducing the generation of methane and excrements, ▲ provide basic genetic information on genetic disease studies of Hanwoo and of mad cow disease, ▲ utilize genetic resources that enhance accuracy of Hanwoo beef identification, ▲ and improve the DNA information resources used for production history of Hanwoo and tracing their distribution route. Professor Kim added emphasis stating, \"In order for us to find the superior genomes of Hanwoo by making comparisons and analysis of foreign cows, we must reveal the comprehensive genome information of Hanwoo and develop the way to utilize it, and this study should provide the source information for it.\" Professor Kim\'s team will continue to conduct research to improve the completeness and accuracy of the genome sequence based on the results of this study, and continue define the detailed features of SNP. The results of the study are scheduled to be reported through major theses and webpages. In addition, in order to utilize the results of this study commercially, plans are being made to find the SNP that is linked to better meat quality and tastes of Hanwoo and to commercialize it as DNA chips. The \'next-generation genetic sequencing analysis method\', which was used in this study is to acquire vast amounts of data, by cutting the entire sequence of the genomes randomly to 280bp, and then by sequencing random fragments. Using this, Professor Kim\'s team used Hanwoo genomes of 10 individuals and sequenced DNA fragments that are 17 times that of the genetic sequencing with sizes of the cow genes being 3x109bp. This was then assembled to the standard sequence of the cow registered in the NCBI to analyze the genetic sequence of Hanwoo.

Professor Cho, Kyung-hyun (42, photo) of Yeungnam University School of Biotechnology developed the methods to greatly improve the delivery efficiency of the existing \'genetic treatment medicine\' and to sharply lower the financial burden while also enhancing the distribution potential, for the first time in the world. \'Gene treatment medicine\' is a method for supplying genes that have been lost for effectively treating various diseases caused by damaged or missing DNA. Thus, the key is on how outside genes can be effectively delivered to the inside of the cell. Currently, the most widely used method is gene transfer method using an \'adenovirus\', but because it is unstable in room temperature, it has short distribution periods, and its problem with the gene delivery abilities weakened in the blood makes it an obstacle in treating incurable diseases. Thus, Professor Cho used nano bio-technologies to make proteoliposomes with phospholipids and apolipoproteins, covering the adenovirus in order to improve gene delivery efficiency by 10 folds, while doubling the stability, proving it for the first time in the world in vertebrae models. The results of this study that was conducted for three years since 2007 receiving support by the Yeungnam University Aging-associated Vascular Disease Research Center (director, Kim, Jae-ryong) and the Ministry of Knowledge Economy (Minister Choi, Kyung-hwan) and it was published in the January 2010 volume of <Human Gene Therapy>, which is an SCI-level journal in the gene treatment sector. This journal, which received an impact factor of 4.1 in the biology and medical sector, was selected as \"Top 100 influential journals in medicine and biology for the past 100 years\' by the 2009 World Library Association. The results of the research of Professor Cho is expected to greatly contribute to the improved delivery efficiency of adenoviruses, but all other medicine delivery devices and genetic treatment medicines such as RNA inhibitors, plasmid DNA, aptamer, etc. Thus, the research team has registered relevant patents, and is currently negotiating with domestic and foreign gene treatment medicine production companies for technology transfer. In particular, this research is expected to be a period of great development in the recently rising \'bio-similar pharmaceutical industry\'. \'Bio-similar\' refers to reproductive medicines related to protein compounds among pharmaceuticals whose patents have expired. When new medicines are developed, international patents usually last 20-25 years. Most original medicines being worth about 1 billion US $ have their patents expired between 2012 and 2013, and thus many companies are preparing in the competition to develop bio-similars, which are a type of reproductive generic medicine. The market scale is estimated at approximately 30 billion US $. Thus, if the results of this study is used for domestic bio-similar pharmaceutical industry, it is expected to provide epochal improvements in its international competitiveness. Meanwhile, Professor Cho is furthering his studies on genetic treatment medicine that could be used for not only killing cancer cells, but utilizing it as the atherosclerosis and aging models based on this research results.

All 11 full-time professors in the Department of Physics signed this pledge. <BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\"> Jang, Wook-joo, a junior, becomes world\'s first to define \'Aging acceleration mechanism of fructose\' In April 2008, Park, Gi-hoon, a senior, published in a SCI journal [Jan 8, 2010] A junior has published a thesis in an SCI level international journal as the main author. <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_0963308083610779 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-04-12_10-18-06_495.jpg\" target=_blank> Professor Cho, Kyung-hyun and Jang, Wook-joo (left), Park, Gi-hoon, posing at the School of Biotechnology Research Lab The spotlight is on Jang, Wook-joo (21) a member of the Professor Cho, Kyung-hyun Research Lab (hereinafter called research team) of the Yeungnam University School of Biotechnology. He proved that fructose changed the structure and functions of key proteins in the blood to cause and promote diabetes, atherosclerosis and aging, and defined its mechanism, he placed his name as the main author on the January 2010 issue of BBRC (Biochemical Biophysical Research Communication), which is an SCI international journal. In particular, by being the world\'s first to define the aging acceleration mechanism of fructose in this thesis, the academic circle is showing high interest. This is because fructose, the sweetest sugar, is used as a sweetener of sodas and fast food and is consumed usually. Accordingly, the research that has been conducted under the support of the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science\'s URP (Undergraduate Research Program) and the Yeungnam University Aging-associated Vascular Disease Research Center since January of last year, resulted in patent pending for development of inhibitors of metabolic syndromes such as aging suppression, diabetes and atherosclerosis. It is very rare for an undergraduate to publish SCI theses. It is even more rare that he placed his name as the main author in the international SCI journal and the results ended up in applying for patents. However, this has happened twice in the research lab of Professor Cho, Kyung-hyun in the School of Biotechnology. Two years ago, as a senior at that time Park, Gi-hoon (24, 2nd batch of MA/PhD integrated course) placed his name as the main author on the thesis that revealed that proteins extracted from Hyphantria cunea could be used as treatment for atherosclerosis in the December 2008 issue of the 2nd most prominent SCI journal, Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology. Park is the co-author of this thesis together with Jang, Wook-joo. The two students stated, \"While conducting research, we learned the danger of sweet tastes.\" They also said, \"It was tough having to work all day long at the lab without any days off, but we were cheered by belief that our research could bring health and happiness to many people,\" and added, \"I hope our belief in our lab will result in better achievements, and hope that our junior students will also publish their works on SCI journals.\" Professor Cho, Kyung-hyun (41), who instructed them, stated, \"Gi-hoon set a good example of diligence coming into the lab at 7:30 everyday to turn the lights on and leaving at 10pm turning the lights off. Wook-joo made his good example and was able to work even harder.\" Cho also added, \"I am happy and grateful to my students who show their ability to surpass me.\"
