<BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\"> Leading research institutes on green energy of Korea, US, Germany, France and Australia gathers at Yeungnam University Announces construction of \'Global Green Energy Cluster Network\' [Nov 16, 2010] <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_06821218346900313 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-12-31_14-46-58_495.jpg\" target=_blank> The \'Global Green Energy Cluster Network\', which vowed international cooperation in R&D and industrialization of green energy technology for the future society, was officially launched in the afternoon of the 16th at the Yeungnam University Chunma Arts Center Chamber Hall. We have now passed the \'age of global competition\' and are entering the \'age of global cooperation\'. At its center stands the Republic of Korea. As to prove this, the G20 summits came to Seoul to exchange ideas for international economic cooperation such as in exchange rate policies, and now, global figures have come to Yeungnam University to search for ways for international cooperation in the solar energy sector. Yeungnam University (president Lee, Hyo-soo) proclaimed the start of the new age of global cooperation after making an agreement with establishing the GGECN (Global Green Energy Cluster Network) to connect Korea, US, France, Germany and Australia in the afternoon of the 16th at the Chunma Arts Center Chamber Hall. Lee, Hyo-soo, who was the keynote speaker, emphasized in his speech titled, \'GIFT plan & GGECN for Sustainable Green Growth\', that the entire world must come together to develop environment-friendly green energy in order to overcome the crisis of mankind caused by climate-change as soon as possible. In particular, he presented the three directions of \'development of new technologies for environment-friendly green energy\', \'energy saving technology development in existing industrial fields\', and \'innovation of energy saving consumption\' for the \'GIFT Plan\', and proposed international cooperation for the future of humankind. This also meant what the global cooperation network must aim for in the green energy sector as well. President Lee stated, \"With the construction of the GGECN, we now lay the cornerstone for the GIFT plan, and information exchange and research cooperation in the green energy sector will be possible from a global aspect.\" He added, \"Yeungnam University\'s GIFT plan will be a big gift not only for the future, but for today\'s world as well. <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_007517765399868287 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-12-31_14-47-43_495.jpg\" target=_blank> While introducing the three directions in the green innovation sector, which has been promoted by Yeungnam University for the future of humanity, Lee, Hyo-soo also proposed to open up the age of global cooperation in his keynote speech. Institutes participating in the GGECN are core institutes that have already led the research and industries of the solar energy sector in their respective nations. In Korea, centering on Yeungnam University\'s Institute of Solar Energy Research, Solar Cell/Module Materials and Process Regional Innovation Center, and the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Economic Belt Green Energy Education & Research Center, Gyeongsangbuk-do, the Gyeongbuk Technopark, Daegu-Gyeongbuk Leading Industry Development for Economic Region, and the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Regional Energy Climate Change Center, as well as the foreign-invested company ISET (International Solar Electric Technology) will be participating. From the US are participating FESC (Florida Energy Systems Consortium), University Center of Excellence for Photovoltaics Research and Education at Georgia Tech, and CRSP (Center for Revolutionary Solar Photoconversion). InESS (Institute of Electronics for Solids and Systems) of France, and TÜV Rheinland of Germany, and University of New South Wales of Australia join in the network. They have gathered at Yeungnam University to promise global cooperation in development of green energy for the future of humanity. They aimed at agreeing to make collaborative efforts for effective research and education in green energy sectors such as solar energy, hydro-energy, wind energy, geothermal heat, bio-mass, atomic energy, etc, and establishing sustainable development policies, while making representative communication channels from the respective countries. Accordingly, Yeungnam University and Gyeongsangbuk-do became not only the center for green energy in Korea, but debuted in the international stage as the center of global cooperation. Yeungnam University will play a role in connecting companies, institutes, research centers and universities of the domestic green energy sector with that of the US, France, Germany and Australia. In addition, it will play the role of brokering domestic consulting of world-renowned scholars in the green energy sector. As part of this, Yeungnam University is planning to drive the details of the private collaboration with InESS of France. InESS is a world-class green energy research institute located in Alsace, France, which has a sister-relationship with Gyeongsangbuk-do, and it is within the University of Strasbourg, which is also a sister-university of Yeungnam University. The US FESC, CRSP, UCEP, and Australia\'s UNSW also promised student exchange programs, joint research, and Shared-use of solar cell manufacturing pilot lines. FESC is the world\'s largest solar energy consortium that is combined with companies, colleges and research centers in the solar energy sector in Florida. CRSP is a consortium in Colorado with members such as the US NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) which is recognized as a world-class green energy research center. In addition, by the agreement which has also been made with Germany\'s TÜV Rheinland Yeungnam University will directly operate the world-class solar cell module international certification and evaluation center from 2011. Furthermore, it agreed to cooperate in attracting foreign investments with the US ISET to promote the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region\'s CIS thin film solar cell industry. Thus, through the establishment of the fusion research paradigm, Yeungnam University has got a green light for \'Green Innovation\', which is one of the \'Global Frontier 10-3-10\', which is the university\'s goal to become one of the top 10 universities in 3 research areas within 10 years. It has already prepared 88 billion won in national funding, and has constructed world-class partnerships now. Thus, it has increased the possibility for the success of Yeungnam University\'s \'GIFT (Green Innovation For Tomorrow)\' plan, which aims at preparing a gift for following generations through green innovation. <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_03648541549074868 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-12-31_14-48-13_495.jpg\" target=_blank> Professor Park, Chin-ho (52, School of Display and Chemical Engineering), who is the director of the Yeungnam University Institute of Solar Energy Research and worked hard day and night for the establishment of GGECN, expected \"GGECN will help upgrade the research capacities of the domestic solar energy sector to world-class levels, and it will not only foster human resources, but also contribute in cutting R&D investment costs of companies, and maximizing productivity.\" Meanwhile, prior to the establishment of GGECN, at 1pm on the 16th, the \'First International Symposium on Solar Energy Technology\' (photo), in which world-renowned scholars in the solar energy sector participated en masse, at the Yeungnam Chunma Arts Center Chamber Hall. <BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\"> Team from Isfahan University of Technology in Iran joins the \'Baja SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) KOREA at Yeungnam University\' First appearance in international competition, scheduled to participate in event in South Africa 3 months later also [July 7, 2010] “We prepared very hard for the past year for this event, but we aren\'t thinking too much about the results. What\'s more important to us is that we do our best so that we have no regrets and that we make friends with university students around the world. At the automobile engineering student festival, we\'ll have fun.\" On the morning of the 7th at the plant lab of Yeungnam University. The IUT team (photo) of the Isfahan University of Technology are working hard from early in the morning. After finally checking the vehicle that arrived late last night, they will be participate in the Baja SAE Korea at Yeungnam University that will be held from the afternoon on this day until the 10th. <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_05400010076814252 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-12-31_09-50-09_495.jpg\" target=_blank> IUT is the KAIST of Iran. It is a university geared to the engineering sector and is located approximately 400km from the capital, Tehran. They decided to participate in the event after finding out that it would be held at Yeungnam University from the US SAE homepage last summer, but there were many obstacles to overcome. The biggest obstacle was the financial issue. Not to mention the cost to manufacture a vehicle, but the round trip airfares and cost to transport the vehicle were quite expensive. After soliciting a number of companies, they received financial support from the well-known Iranian oil refinery companies Nargan and North Drilling Company. The IUT team focused mainly on the suspension system for their vehicle. Because there is an offroad race, it absorbed shock from the road to minimize fatigue of the driver and controls irregular motion of the vehicle when driving on severely bumpy surfaces through increasing the tire grip for better control to enhance its driving power and braking power. Thus, they have strong confidence in the dynamic test that inspects the vehicle\'s braking power, traction power, control power, etc as well as in endurance race in which the track must be completed in 3 and a half hours. The team\'s leader Mortez (23) stated, \"It is not common for university students to receive support from a company in Iran to participate in an international event, so it was very difficult for us to find sponsors. But, after continuously persuading them without giving up they pledged their support to us beyond our expectation,\" and added, \"We will do our best until the end for those who trusted and supported us.\" Another hurdle to overcome was that they never experienced international competitions. The only experience is that their upperclassmen participated in an international competition five years ago in South Africa. Thus, for the past year the 6 mechanical engineering students, 1 industrial engineering student and 1 material engineering student came together as a team of pioneers and had to learn for theirselves and gain experience from A to Z. Dr. Mohsen Esfahanian (46), who guided these students, stated, \"We had to overcome many trials-and-errors to join this event in Korea, but I am very proud of the students who solved and overcame every problem.\" He also added, \"One thing I would like to tell my students is to be willing to learn at all times wherever they are, and I hope they can enjoy this experience, regardless of the results.\" The IUT team is planning to take another challenge in the Republic of South Africa in the coming October using the experience from this event. <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_02860512930665488 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-12-31_09-50-47_495.jpg\" target=_blank> On another note, the participation of the team from Iran is giving as a fresh impetus to domestic teams. Team leader Lee, Si-mok (24, Junior, Major of Mechanical System) of Yeungnam University \'Chunma DM\', which is a veteran team that participated in this event for the past 15 years and won on several occasions, stated, \"The fact that friends from foreign countries to take part in this competition is heating things up,\" adding, \"We will play fair so that they can go back to their home countries with good memories of Korea.\" The Baja SAE Korea at Yeungnam University, which is hosted by Yeungnam University, has been hosted for the past 15 years, and it will be held at the Yeungnam University Gyeongsan campus until July 10. 56 teams from Korea and abroad will compete in this event, and the first place winner will receive the Minister of Knowledge Economy Award, winner\'s flag and a trophy. Results of the event will be announced worldwide through the official homepage of SAE (www.sae.org) and through various publications. <Photo> The IUT team and Chunma DM team are making final checks at the plant lab.

<BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\"> Jointly volunteer with UNESCO and International Work Camp Opportunity to grow into becoming a global citizen [June 30, 2010] <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_06227450202509328 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-12-30_14-38-23_495.jpg\" target=_blank> This summer, 129 students from Yeungnam University will practice \'love without borders\' in 14 countries in Europe and Asia. Yeungnam University (president Lee, Hyo-soo) held a launching ceremony of the 19th overseas volunteer groups at the main auditorium of the Law Library on the morning of the 30th. The competition was 4 to 1 for selection, and they will be dispatched to 14 nations around the world including Turkey, Armenia, Slovakia, Estonia, Ukraine, and Indonesia from early July. In particular, since it is a program jointly being pursued by Yeungnam University and international organizations such as UNESCO and IWO (International Workcamp Organization), it is a great opportunity to increase capacities as a global citizen. This is because young people from all over the world will come together and work and live together for about a month, and so it will offer the opportunity to overcome the racial, language, and cultural differences and be able to respect each other. Furthermore, it is also a great chance to naturally create a global human network with young people from around the world. To the students leaving for overseas volunteer work, Lee, Hyo-soo stated, \"By taking time at night to assess the day\'s volunteer activities, you will be able to learn the various perspectives of people from different countries on the same problem, and will also be able to learn from them.\" He also emphasized, \"If time for assessment is not included in the schedule, our students should take charge and make this time. That is the way to global leadership.\" Yeungnam University is the only university in the local area that has dispatched an overseas volunteer group in collaboration with international organizations. The only universities in Korea to do so is Yeungnam University, Hongik University and Kyunghee University. Lee, Ju-mi (Senior in Department of Korean Language and Literature, 23), who will be departing for Turkey on July 7, stated, \"I am planning to spend the month not thinking of it as volunteer work, but as a chance to meet and become friends with the people of the world. That\'s because if I think that I am going there to help people in economically less fortunate environments than ours, that may lead to a sense of chauvinism.\" She added, \"I want to share the kindness of Koreans to Turkey, which is our \'brotherly country\' and become friends with people of all over the world.\" <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_027768582151537835 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-12-30_14-38-43_495.jpg\" target=_blank>

The award is granted to young scientists in graduate school or post-doc researchers who have published an outstanding thesis. Dr. Thapa received the honors at the awarding ceremony at the 20th anniversary symposium of the Bio-Pharmacy Research Association on the 16th. Dr. Thapa, who studied at the national Tribhuvan University (Kathmandu), which is Nepal\'s best university, enrolled at the Yeungnam University College of Pharmacy PhD program in September 2006. Prior to coming to study abroad, he had a managerial position at the brand development department of a beer company in Nepal, and rather than taking a high salary and stable lifestyle, he chose to become a researcher. And by the time he received his PhD in December 2009, he published over 10 theses in SCI and SCIE (Science Citation Index Expanded) level international journals on research of colon cancer. This resulted in him being hired as a research professor at the Yeungnam University College of Pharmacy in March and also winning the Young Scientists Awards. He is currently studying vascularization in the cancer cell metastasis process, and his dream spend his life researching the bio-pharmacy sector. However, he is planning to suspend his research temporarily next month and return to his home country. He is going to wed his fiance who has stood by his side waiting for the past 4 years. He was happy to give his wife a meaningful wedding gift and said, \"I am ever-more honored because this award is from private funds given by veteran professors in pharmacy and bio-science sectors to foster younger scientists.\" He added, \"I am able to receive this honor because of my colleagues and under-classmen that have shown the best teamwork in a family-like environment in the lab, and Professor Kim, Jung-ae, who always demanded our very best.\" <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_02683046616688608 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-12-30_13-49-01_495.jpg\" target=_blank> [Colleagues of the research lab and Professor Kim, Jung-ae (second from the right) congratulating Dr. Thapa\'s awarding] Professor Kim, Jung-ae (College of Pharmacy), who guided him as he wrote his PhD thesis, stated, \"It\'s become a problem that the younger generation of Korea are increasingly avoiding natural sciences or engineering majors, so I hope that the success story of Dr. Thapa who gave up his guaranteed lifestyle in search of his dreams will be know far and wide so that talented students will study in natural sciences or engineering.\" <See article related> <yonhapnews>2010-6-21 http://app.yonhapnews.co.kr/YNA/Basic/article/new_search/YIBW_showSearchArticle.aspx?searchpart=article&searchtext=%ec%98%81%eb%82%a8%eb%8c%80&contents_id=AKR20100621129800053 <Kyunghyang Shinmun>2010-6-22 http://news.khan.co.kr/kh_news/khan_art_view.html?artid=201006211727505&code=100203 <The Seoul Economic>2010-6-22 http://economy.hankooki.com/lpage/opinion/201006/e2010062114353248200.htm <Maeil Shinmun>2010-6-22 http://www.imaeil.com/sub_news/sub_news_view.php?news_id=25460&yy=2010 <Electronic Times>2010-6-22 http://www.etnews.co.kr/news/detail.html?id=201006210111 <Yeongnamilbo>2010-6-22 http://www.yeongnam.com/yeongnam/html/yeongnamdaily/collar/article.shtml?id=20100622.010250711100001 <The Financial News>2010-6-22 http://www.fnnews.com/view?ra=Sent1601m_View&corp=fnnews&arcid=0922020458&cDateYear=2010&cDateMonth=06&cDateDay=21 <Kyongbukilbo>2010-6-22 http://www.kyongbuk.co.kr/main/news/news_content.php?id=493875&news_area=080&news_divide=08001&news_local=&effect=4 <Daeguilbo>2010-6-22 http://www.idaegu.com/new/pages/sub.php?load=su&bcode=ALAE&no=6525 <Kuminilbo>2010-6-23 http://news.kukinews.com/article/view.asp?page=1&gCode=kmi&arcid=0003842214&cp=du

This time they are Lee, Ji-hye (23), who is in her first year in her master\'s degree course and Park, Jeong-heun (22), who is a senior in her undergraduate course. They found an important clue in preventing arteriosclerosis and published their clinical research thesis in the June issue of 《the International Journal of Molecular Medicine》. <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_05819085806527986 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-12-30_13-39-52_495.jpg\" target=_blank> [Lee, Ji-hye (left) and Park, Jeong-heun (right) are speaking with Professor Cho, Kyung-hyun (center) while looking at their thesis that published in the SCI journal] After analyzing a 64 year old Korean woman who had hyperlipidemia, but had low density lipoprotein (LDL), and thus did not show signs of arteriosclerosis, they discovered that it is essential to lower the value of LDL from cholesterol. This suggested a new direction on existing research that focused on lowering the overall value of cholesterol, and it was recognized for its value in the international society through the publication of the thesis. Park, Jeong-heun commented, \"I was able to place my name on the SCI journal as an undergraduate student because of Ji-hye.\" Meanwhile, Lee, Ji-hye praised Park, Jeong-heun stating, \"It was possible to complete tests that would have been difficult to do alone because of Jeong-heun\'s help and so we were able to attain good results.\" She added, \"She never complained of the frequent all-nighters last semester and I really thank her for being such a great research partner.\" <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_02782144359040765 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2010-12-30_13-40-24_495.jpg\" target=_blank> Lee, Ji-hye is planning to present the research results by participating in the 78th European Arteriosclerosis Conference to be held in Hamburg, Germany in the middle of this month. Park, Jeong-heun, who will begin her master\'s degree course next semester will also participate in the HDL Research Conference to be held in Reus, Spain in September and is planning to present the research results of the aging-suppression tests that she is currently working on. Thus, Professor Cho, Kyung-hyun\'s research lab has continued its tradition of \'undergraduate student SCI thesis publication\'. This first started in December 2008. At the time, Park, Gi-hoon (25, the 3rd master\'s and doctorate\'s combined program), who was at the time a senior, became the first to discover that proteins extracted from Hyphantria cunea could be transformed using bio-engineering technologies to treat atherosclerosis, and published his paper in the Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology, which was the second most authoritative international journal in the related sector. Furthermore, it was an issue because the main author of the paper was an undergraduate student. Also in the past January, Jang, Wook-joo (21), a junior, became the first in the world to clarify the aging-promotion mechanism of fructose and was listed as the first author in the SCI listed journal called Biochemical Biophysical Research Communication. Moreover, the research results were used to apply for a patent on the development of a treatment for suppressing metabolic syndromes such as aging-suppression and diabetes/arteriosclerosis, which is a rare achievement for an undergraduate student. This was achieved through the \'undergraduate research program (URP)\' support of the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science & Creativity, and after completing the project, Choi was also selected as the best S-level student in the analysis. This resulted in receiving the presidential award bestowed to \'Y-type Talents\' at the Yeungnam University 63rd Anniversary. Such achievements are the results of passing down the passion for academic exploration by seniors to juniors. Jang, Wook-joo and Park Jeong-heun could be recognized internationally for their research achievements despite the fact that they were undergraduates because Park, Gi-hoo and Lee, Ji-hye become their the role models. Professor Cho, Kyung-hyun (42), who is in charge of the lab, stated, \"Thanks to the diligence of Gi-hoon, who was nicknamed \'Kant of the School of Biotechnology\' and came to school everyday at 8 am and stayed until past 9 pm, the entire lab is filled with the passion to study.\" He added, \"I hope that senior and junior students will continue to collaborate to achieve great results and continue the tradition of our lab that continues to accumulate such achievements.\" Meanwhile, Professor Cho, Kyung-hyun, was recently introduced in the Researchers Page of the National Research Foundation of Korea for the accumulated research results on aging and arteriosclerosis.
