Hosted by the YU Dokdo Institute, YU Humanities Hall Auditorium on the 9th at 2 P.M. Invite world-renowned scholars 1 - 2times per year, scheduling regular Dokdo Concerts [March 7, 2013] The YU Dokdo Institute (director Choi, Jae Mok), a research institute of policies by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, invited Park, No Ja (40, photo) a professor of East Asian Studies at University of Oslo in Norway, to hold the 'Dokdo, Life, Peace Concert' (hereinafter referred to as 'Dokdo Concert'). The Dokdo Concert that will be held on the 9th at 2 P.M. at the YU Humanities Hall Auditorium is being opened amidst worsened Korea-Japan diplomatic relations over the Dokdo issue since the launching of the Abe regime in Japan. Through the voice of a world-renowned intellectuals, East Asian peace and a new order and direction that supercedes territory and boundaries will be searched for. Professor Park, No Ja who was invited as a speaker will hold a special, two-hour long lecture on 'Talking about the potential for Korea-Japan alliance and peace beyond territorial perspectives'. YU Professor Park, Hong Kyu (School Of General Education) will also participate as a debater. As evident in the subtitle of his lecture 'Development outlook on Korea-Japan relations based on conscience and common struggle', Professor Park uses the historical example of Korea-Japan solidarity that aimed to overcome the contradictions of colonizers/colonized, and claimed that "a 'society without categorization of nationality and prejudice of races' is the only future-oriented alternative for capitalism that is on its way to utter destruction." Director of the YU Dokdo Institute, Choi, Jae Mok (Department of Philosophy) who planned the event stated, "The Dokdo issue should be seen not as a territorial issue of East Asia, but from the perspective of future-oriented relations," and added, "We provided this as an opportunity for mutual communication of East Asia not for the 'solution' of the Dokdo issue, but for its 'alleviation'." In accordance to such goal, the YU Dokdo Institute is planning to hold Dokdo Concerts inviting prominent foreign scholars regularly once or twice a year. Furthermore, on Mary 23, they are planning to invite 13 scholars from Russia, China and Japan and hold an international academic conference under the title 'Integration and Understanding of Culture through Marine Hubs of East Asia'. ※ Professor Park, No Ja was born in Russia and is a progressive historian and an author and contributor who focuses on the themes of social change and social development represents anti-fascism. After graduating in the Department of Korean Studies at St. Petersburg State University of Russia, he earned his PhD at the Moscow State University Graduate School of Korean Studies. From 2000, he has been serving as a professor of East Asian Studies at the University of Oslo in Norway where teaches Korean studies. He was nationalized as a South Korean citizen in 2001.

First Secretary to the President for Education for the Park Geun-hye Administration [February 26, 2013] Professor Gim, Chae Chun (50, Department of Education, photo) was nominated as the first Secretary to the President for Education of the Cheong Wa Dae of the Park Geun-hye Government. Secretary Gim served as a member of the Happiness Education Task Force of the People's Happiness Committee, which was the election campaign camp for President Park during her presidential campaign. He also served as an expert advisor of the presidential transition committee. Secretary Gim earned his bachelor's degree in education at the Seoul National University College of Education (1986), master's in education at the Seoul National University Graduate School of Education (1988), and PhD in education at the UCLA Graduate School (1996). He has been serving as a professor at the YU Department of Education since March 2000. In the school, he has served as a vice-dean of the College of Education, director of the Teaching & Learning Support Center, and the vice-dean of the Graduate School of Education. He also served as a researcher for the Korean Educational Development Institute and the Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation, director of the Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice educational policy committee, and as various policy advisors for the Ministry of Education. He is also the president of the Asia IARTEM(International Assosiation for Research on Textbooks and Educational Media).

YU President Noh, Seok Kyun makes surprise visit to the new student orientation Unprecedented visit by YU President, the orientation mood up! Stated challenge for the next 4 years [February 25, 2013] 11:55 a.m., February 25, Seongdeok Training Institute auditorium in Yeongcheon. On the second day of 'Saeteo' (the new student orientation), the freshmen class of 2013 in the YU College of Liberal Arts had an unexpected visit from the special guest. The surprise visitor was YU President Noh, Seok Kyun. Since his appointed to YU president on February 1, he wanted to meet his first new freshmen as soon as possible. President Noh took the podium in front of over 600 freshmen in the College of Liberal Arts and said, "2013 will be remembered as a very special year to both you and me. This is the year that I start as the president of YU and for you, as students of YU. Here and today is where we first met and for the next four years, we will work together for a better future. This is truly a valuable relationship. I will always remember this overwhelming feeling that I am experiencing as I meet you." President Noh also stated, "Literature, History and Philosophy that you will major in is the most fundamental starting point of all academic disciplines. I hope that you make the most out of your university life in this day of age where character and culture has become more important than ever, as you find the path you want to take for your life, while establishing your own set of values." He also added with promise, "I hope that you work hard to make your 4 years in YU the happiest and most enjoyable time of your life, and I will also do my best as the president of the university." Lunch time passed when President Noh arrived, but the students did not care and continued to listen intently. They also responded their surprise and welcome for his visit with cheers. Lim, Hyo Jin (19, female), who has officially become a 2013 freshman at the YU Department of English Language and Literature after enrolling on the 28th said, "I finally feel like I've become a university student coming here to Saeteo. I am really happy that the president of the university came to visit us. University presidents are not someone who students can easily meet. But it doesn't feel like that for us." She added, "Like he said, I renewed my will to spend a meaningful 4 years." Choi, Jeung Young (Department of Korean Language and Literature, 24, male), who is the student president of the College of Liberal Arts and the supervisor of the Saeteo, said, "I've never even heard of a university president coming to meet freshmen at Saeteo before school even started. I hope that his visit will be the start of a new tradition." He added, "I hope that our students will have more pride in their university life thanks to the special interest and encouragement that the university president expressed." Meanwhile, 16 professors including Lee, Jeong Hi, dean of the College of Liberal Arts, visited the Saeteo to give advice and encourage the new freshmen. The College of Liberal Arts Saeteo was held for 3 days from the 24th to the 26th.

Graduation ceremony for 2012 - 3,736 earns bachelor's, 578 master's and 89 doctorate's degrees. Unique signs congratulating graduations [February 22, 2013] YU (President Noh, Seok Kyun) held a graduation ceremony for the graduate school at the Chunma Art Center Chamber Hall at 11 A.M. on the 22nd, as well as undergraduate and special graduate schools held the ceremonies, and gave degrees to 3,726 bachelors', 578 masters' and 89 PhDs. In particular, Kim, Hye Na (25), who is a philosophy major, received diplomas for a total of 3 majors including her main major of philosophy and in business and ethical education. A total of 402 students received bachelor's degrees with dual majors. The oldest graduate was Mr. Na, Jung Gi at the age of 68, while Park, Joo Won was the youngest graduate at the age of 20. In the graduation ceremony of the graduate school, the American Thomas Duvernay received his PhD in Korean studies A total of 167 foreign students (102 bachelor's, 53 master's, 12 PhDs) from 14 different countries, including Shafir Kalathil (27) from India who received a PhD in chemical engineering. Meanwhile, there were many unique signs that stood out to congratulate the graduation all around the YU campus. Graduating students, friends and families had a great time taking photos in front of signs decorated with witty comments and pictures. One graduate who took photos after being tossed in the air by friends said, "I made great memories thanks to my friends," and added, "I will upload the photos today on my blog and Facebook to share these memories with my friends."

Will work to strengthen support for graduates of the College of Law, while normalizing Law School education [February 20, 2013] Professor Bae, Byung Il of the Law School was selected as the 11th chairperson of the Korea Law Professors Association. The Korea Law Professors Association held a re-election for the chairperson of the 11th chairperson at the mock court of Dongguk University on the 19th, and Professor Bae was appointed as the chairperson by taking 56 of the 108 votes. His term will be for two years. The new Chairperson Bae said, "We have the heavy responsibility of responding to the demand for law majors, which have been increasing in various aspects of society, by supplying outstanding human resources appropriately. I will do my best so that colleges of law and law schools that are in charge of Korea's legal education will be successful." He also added, "I will work hard for strengthening support for graduates of colleges of law, establishing plans for the normalization of law school education, promoting exchange between colleges of laws and law schools, and promoting the professors association." Chairperson Bae served as the dean of the YU College of Law, dean of the Law School, and as the chairperson of the Association of Deans of Korean Law Colleges. He is currently serving as the vice-chairperson of Korean Association of Private Law and the director of the Korean Association of Law Schools Law Legal Education Eligibility Test(LEET) Research Team. The Korea Law Professors Association that was launched in 1964 is the headquarters and incubator studies in law in Korea and it is an organization that represents over 2,000 law professors in 25 law schools and 75 colleges of law across the nation.

Will Work for the future national development and regional development [February 20, 2013] Professor Lee, Hwan Beom (50, photo) of the Department of Public Administration was appointed as the new 17th chairperson of the National Association Korean Local Government Studies(KLGS). The KLGS was first founded in 1995 in response of the age of local administration of Korea and its 500 members are conducting in-depth research and academic activities in relation to the local administrations and the resolution of pending problems of regions. Chairman Lee made a speech saying, "In light of the launching of the new Park Geun-hye Government, I will do my best to contribute to the KLGS for future national development and regional development." He also added, "Based on my experience in academic circles and in the government, I will look for ways to enhance the capacity of the association and expand ties, and furthermore, I will strive for the effective operation of the association and the improvement of its performance." Chairman Lee, who earned his master's and PhD of public administration at the University of Southern California, served as the director of the Ministry of Public Administration and Security(MOPAS) Organization Assessment Division (opened high-ranking position, 2007) and as the director of the MOPAS Administrative Assessment Center (2008-2009). While assessing the organizations of the central and local governments, he led the reforms of government-level administration systems, earning respect both internally and externally. In particular, during the Lee Myung-bak Government, he worked on shortening the gap between reality and government policies through government-academic linked activities as a committee person of the Presidential Commission for Decentralization and as a expert member of the Presidential Committee on Local Administration Reform. Furthermore, until recently at YU he served as the director of the URP (University Resource Planning) and as the dean of the Graduate School of Public Administration, and is currently the chief at the Korea Research Institute for Balanced Development.

'YU Saemaul Scholarship' gives scholarships to 12 students in the Department of Regional Development and Welfare Administration Total 83 million won to 83 students since 2006 in scholarship [February 19, 2013] There is a special love for juniors by graduates of the YU Department of Regional Development and Welfare Administration. Graduates who became public officers after receiving the 'Saemaul Scholarship' for 4 years founded 'YU Saemaul Scholarship' in December 2003 and since 2006, they have been awarding scholarships to about 10 students every year. This year as well at Green Narea on the 3rd floor of the Daegu Bank headquarters on the 15th, they held the '8th YU Saemaul Scholarship Grant Ceremony' where a total of 12 students such as Kim, Kwang Deok and two other freshmen, sophomore Kim, Ah Young, and Kwon, Ik Soo and 7 other juniors at the YU Department of Regional Development and Welfare Administration, where a total of 12 million won in scholarships were granted. There is now a total of 83 students in the YU Department of Regional Development and Welfare Administration who received scholarships from their seniors via the 'YU Saemaul Scholarship'. The total amount of the scholarships granted tallied up to 83 million won. At this meaningful event that continues the tradition of 'love for juniors', chairperson of the YU Saemaul Scholarship Choi, Oe Chool, president of the Daegu Gyeongbuk Development Institute Lee, Seong Keun, Department Dean Lee, Jae Mo, Professor Yi, Yang Soo and other professors of the YU Department of Regional Development and Welfare Administration, as well as graduates who are currently members of YU Saemaul Scholarship such as Park, Ui Sik, Seo, Won and Jeon, Hwa Sik (Gyeongbuk), Jeon, Jae Gyeong, Kwon, Sung Do, Ha, Young Sook (Daegu), Shin, Jun Ho (Ministry of Health and Welfare), Choi, Young Jae (certified labor attorney), Choi, Sang Yong (CFO of the Scholarship and CEO of Green Power), Jung, Eun Young, Ahn, Ji Min (Daegu Gyeongbuk Development Institute), and Dr. Choi, Jun Ho (Research Professor at the PARK CHUNG HEE Leadership Research Institute) attended the event to congratulate their juniors. At the opening address, Chairperson of the YU Saemaul Scholarship Choi, Oe Chool said, "The Saemaul Scholarship, which was received by seniors one generation ago, is continuing again in the global Saemaul Movement where everyone can live happily," and added, "There were 36 who applied for the scholarship this year, but we feel bad that we could only give scholarships to 12. We will increase the number of beneficiaries by one every year."

"Based on the 45 year tradition of the society, I will work on the globalization of Korean aesthetics..." [February 12, 2013] Professor Min, Joo Sik (Department of Aesthetics & Art History, 59) was appointed as the new president of the Korean Society of Aesthetics. He was elected as the new president through a special meeting of the Korean Society of Aesthetics held at Seoul National University on December 14 and his term will be for two years beginning on January 2013. President Min stated, "Based on the achievements and tradition as a pivotal society for Korean humanities for the past 45 years, I will work hard to show Korea's aesthetics to the world." He also emphasized that he will work on preparing for the 20th International Congress of Aesthetics that will be held in Seoul in 2016. President Min earned his bachelor's and master's degree in aesthetics at Seoul National University and completed his PhD program at the University of Tokyo Division of Aesthetics in Japan and served as a professor at the YU College of Design and Art since 1984. He worked on educating younger students by opening the Graduate School of Aesthetics & Art History in 1988 and also served as the director of Division of Culture and Convergence in the National Research Foundation of Korea (2009-2010). He is currently serving as a committee member of the Daegu Art Museum and the president of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Culture Management Forum. Meanwhile, the Korean Society of Aesthetics was founded in 1968 and over 500 members are actively conducting research and academic exchange. Currently, the Korean Society of Aesthetics publishes <Aesthetics>, an academic journal registered with the National Research Foundation of Korea, four times a year and it also holds research conferences and operates research subcommittees, while publishing special academic books and pursuing academic exchange with other academic societies both in Korea and abroad.

Graduates of the College of Pharmacy Received Top Scores in 63rd and 64th Examinations Officially displays the excellent education for cultivating pharmacists [February 7, 2013] YU (President Noh, Seok Kyun) verified its excellent education for pharmacists by producing the top scorer in the National Pharmacist Examinations for two consecutive years. Recently, the National Health Personnel Licensing Examination Board (President Jung, Myung-hyun) announced the results of the 64th National Pharmacist Examination. According to this, a student who graduated from the YU College of Pharmacy in August last year scored 292 out of 300 total points (97.3%), and thus scored the highest in the nation. In the 63rd National Pharmacist Examination, Ji, Sung-min (26, College of Pharmacy), who was a senior at the time, scored 294 out of 300, scoring the highest in the nation. Thus, YU students scored the higest in the examinations for two consecutive years. On this, the YU College of Pharmacy stated, "Since its establishment in 1954, we graduated over 4,000 pharmacists over 58 years and this is the result of the tradition and capacities of the YU College of Pharmacy that contributed to improving national health," while adding, "We will use the 1.5 billion won in scholarships contributed by alumni and professors effectively to cultivate more and better pharmacists." According to the Korean Pharmaceutical Association's member report, 2,172 of the 30,194 members are from the YU College of Pharmacy, being the fifth largest alumni in the association. Meanwhile, 436 applied to the 64th National Pharmacist Examination and only 262 passed, having a passing rate of 60.1%. This was a drop of 28.8% compared to last year's 88.9% and it is the lowest percentage in the past five years.

14th YU President Noh, Seok Kyun Begins Term Inauguration Ceremony at 2PM on the 13th at the Chunma Arts Center Chamber Hall [February 4, 2013] On February 1, 2013, Noh, Seok Kyun (photo) began his official term as the 14th president of YU. The inauguration ceremony will be held at the YU Chunma Arts Center Chamber Hall at 2PM on the 13th. President Noh, who was appointed as the 14th president of YU through an executive board meeting on December 21 of last year, will lead YU for the next 4 years with the vision 'YU, the Future: Creating a better future'. President Noh served as a ranking faculty official (deputy director of research), chairperson of the Faculty Assembly, chairperson of the University Council, chairperson of the Yeungnam Educational Foundation Normalization Committee, and the director of the Yeungnam Educational Foundation Planning and Coordination Department, making him the first YU president with experience in major positions for both the university and the foundation. He stated, "I am fully aware of the positions of both the university and the foundation so I will be able to help in creating a competitive university through communication and harmony." During his term he is planning to concentrate on 'establishing the university identity' and 'insuring substantiality for the normalization of the foundation'. He said, "I will always keep in mind the university's long-term vision and development strategies, but for the 4 years that I am the university president, I will be one who 'does what is possible' and an 'acting' president who goes to the places of the problems to resolve it." He also added, "I will not shy away from anything to achieve the two goals of first properly establishing the educational spirit of Former President Park Chung Hee, who was the founder of our university, in order to restore the honor and pride of YU members and enroot an identity for the YU, and second, to promptly normalize the in-school system that is still lacking despite the normalization of the foundation, while also expanding and making the finances of the foundation and university more internally stable." As part of the plans to establish the university identity, the 'Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul' that was opened last year will be promoted and developed into the top brand of YU. "Though we were unable to really research the leadership of Former President Park Chung-hee, who is the founder of our university, as well as Saemaul because of the political situation in Korea, we will now procure outstanding faculty, curriculum and facilities to conduct full-fledged research and education so that people both in Korea and abroad have the perception that Saemaul equals YU." Sub-strategies will be pursued in the 3 sectors of Education, Research and Administration in order to enhance internal stability. The goal is to ▲make a university that studies hard and finds employment easily, ▲make a university with outstanding professors, and to ▲make a university with good administrative services. President Noh said with emphasis, "The owners of the university are the students, professors and employees. Their competitiveness is the backbone and yardstick for the university's competitiveness." He added, "We will help students not only gain competence in their majors, but so that they will also have proper character and leadership. For this, we will invest in facilities for students and create a pleasant campus for students to study, rest and exercise in. In order to procure outstanding professors, we will properly evaluate the research achievements of new professors and for existing professors, we will enforce a personnel system that contributes to the university's development in which professors who are good at lecturing give lectures and professors who excel in research can conduct research. For excellent administrative services, we will construct a fair personnel management system to contribute to administrative specialization and efficiency." Also, President Noh is determined to do his best for the next four years for ▲expanding and specializing facilities and infrastructures to improve the competitiveness of the medical center and ▲searching for response strategies according to the decrease of the school-going population. President Noh stated, "I feel a greater sense of responsibility being appointed as the university president at this juncture of growing further following the normalization of the foundation," and added, "I will work very hard to meet the anticipations of not only the university members, but also the community and alumni. I would like to ask the community to support us so that YU's competitiveness can lead to the competitiveness of our community and society."
