From September 3 to 11, a YU delegation composed of international officials, including YU Vice President for International Education Kim Jae-chun, visited Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.The YU delegation had a busy schedule, visiting government agencies and universities in both countries and signing exchange agreements. During their visit to Tajikistan on September 4, the YU delegation signed an MOU with the Ministry of Agriculture of Tajikistan to promote agricultural advancement through education and technology development. The signing ceremony was attended by the YU delegation and Deputy Minister Nigina Anvari of the Ministry of Agriculture. The agreement includes the following points: With the signing of the agreement, the two organizations pledged to work together to ▲ share Korea's experience in socio-economic development through the Saemaul movement ▲ cooperate between YU and the Ministry of Agriculture of Tajikistan through agricultural technology sharing ▲ conduct knowledge-sharing pilot projects to promote sustainable agriculture and the Saemaul movement ▲ and provide capacity-building training for leaders of the Ministry of Agriculture of Tajikistan. From September 7 onward, they visited Tashkent International University of Technology, Turin Polytechnic University in Tashkent, and Samarkand State University, with which YU has already been actively exchanging. During these visits, the delegation checked the status of the dual-degree program recruitments, reviewed educational curriculums, and inspected school facilities, discussing necessary improvements. On September 9, the delegation visited Samarkand International University of Technology, where they signed an MOA for a joint operation program in the visual design department, enabling students to transfer to YU after completing their second year at Samarkand International University of Technology to earn a degree in visual design. Joint effort by YU Museum, the Department of Cultural Anthropology BK21 Education Research Team, and Gyeongsan Urban Self-Sustaining Committee Promoting local urban culture and sustainable development Exhibition opens on September 25, runs until November 29, 2024 [September 26, 2024] YU (President Choi Oe-chool) is hosting a special exhibition, "Local Old Shops" at the YU Museum in celebration of the university’s 77th anniversary. There was a time when life was hard. A time when even a handful of rice was scarce. Some people began with nothing but diligence, overcoming countless challenges. Their stories, spanning decades of building foundations for the future and passing down their businesses, are as captivating as any drama or film. As part of the university museum revitalization support project, this exhibition was organized to commemorate the 77th anniversary of YU founding. The theme of the special exhibition is "Local Old Shops – Our Neighbors Who Share Life's Beautiful Moments."The exhibition aims to uncover and reexamine local old shops, bringing attention to their cultural significance while creating a future cultural heritage to revitalize urban culture and promote sustainable development in the region. It also seeks to highlight the younger generation inheriting family businesses, fostering hope for youth settlement in the local community. The exhibition is a collaborative result of YU Museum, the Gyeongsan Urban Self-Sustaining Committee, and graduate students from the BK21 Education Research Team in the Department of Cultural Anthropology, who served as guest curators. University members, students, and local citizens participated together in every step of the process, from selecting the old shops to collecting data through field research and writing exhibition materials. This sharing of exhibition and research capabilities accumulated by the university museum over the years with local citizens and students will serve as a foundation for preserving local culture and transforming it into future cultural heritage. Among the selected old shops that have shared life’s beautiful moments with the local community are Baekcheon Noodle Factory, Anseong Industrial, 7th Street Tailor Shop, Youngmi Photo Studio, and Bicycle Department Store. Through communication with the shop owners, the history of their lives and businesses was collected and displayed in the exhibition. The exhibition features the old shops themselves, their owners who have accumulated decades of expertise, and the worn tools that carry the essence of their craft and style. Old shops represent a significant cultural asset, embodying the everyday history of the local community. Lee Eun-jeong, Director of the YU Museum, stated, “I hope this exhibition offers an opportunity to re-examine these old shops, which have shared our life’s most beautiful moments, with warmth and helps position them as cultural heritage with future value. Through this exhibition, I invite everyone to feel the honesty in the hands of those who have walked a single path, the value of their sweat, and the journey from their toil to the art of life.” The special exhibition opens at 2 p.m. on September 25 at the Special Exhibition Hall on the 2nd floor of YU Museum and will run until November 29, 2024. 23,962 Applicants for 3,863 Seats, an Increase from the Previous Year Record High Number of Applicants for YU Early Admission Faculty of Pharmacy Tops with a 36.4:1 Competition Ratio in Potentially Excellent Student Admission (Region) [September 13, 2024] YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) concluded its 2025 early admission application process at 6 PM on September 13th, recording an average competition ratio of 6.2:1. A total of 23,962 students applied for 3,863 seats (within the regular quota), marking a slight increase from the previous year’s ratio of 6.18:1. Despite an increase in the number of available spots compared to last year, the competition ratio still rose. A total of 25,542 applicants, including those outside the regular quota, applied—457 more than the previous year—setting a new record for the highest number of applicants in Yeungnam University’s early admission history. The fields of medicine and pharmacy, which have traditionally had high competition, showed high competition again this time. Faculty of Pharmacy recorded the highest ratio in the Potentially Excellent Student Admission (Regional) (36.4:1), with 182 applicants competing for 5 spots. In the General Student Admission, 581 students applied for 16 seats in the Faculty of Pharmacy, resulting in a 36.31:1 ratio, and the Regional Talent Admission also saw a high ratio of 27.38:1. For the Medical School, the General Student Admission recorded a 23.67:1 ratio, with 284 applicants competing for 12 seats. Other admission categories in the medical program also showed high competition ratios, including 16.54:1 in the Regional Talent Selection and 15.88:1 in the Medical Creative Talent Selection. Other majors also exhibited strong competition in the General Student Admission, including the Department of Fiber System Engineering (11.73:1), Department of Forestry Resources (10.5:1), Global Education Division (10.38:1), Department of Sociology (10.1:1). In the Regional Talent Selection, Applied Chinese Translation (13.17:1), Political Science and Diplomacy (11.09:1), and Fiber System Engineering (10.5:1) also showed high competition. The Department of Media and Communication (15.82:1), Department of Police Administration (15.43:1), Department of Psychology (12.08:1), and the College of Liberal Arts (Undeclared Humanities) (11.92:1) also recorded high ratios. In the practical skills category, the Physical Education Department showed a 9.71:1 ratio. By admission category, 8,967 students applied for 1,444 seats in the General Student Admission, recording a 6.21:1 ratio. The Regional Talent Admission attracted 5,895 applicants for 932 seats (6.33:1), and 6,266 students applied for 913 seats in the Potentially Excellent Student Admission, yielding a 6.86:1 ratio. Meanwhile, YU 2025 early admission practical exams for arts and physical education will be held on October 29th for the Physical Education Department and from October 29-31 for the College of Arts. Interviews for the Medical Creative Talent Selection will take place on October 12th. Results for the practical and specialized categories will be announced on November 11th, with results for other categories released on December 13th.

Awarded at the 2024 Government Awards Ceremony for Job Creation on September 9th Recognized for Providing Employment Support Services to Local Youth and Enhancing Government Youth Employment Policies Demonstrates YU Excellent Career and Employment Support System [September 12, 2024] <NOH Kyung-yoon (45), head of the Career and Employment Support Team> NOH Kyung-yoon (45), head of the Career and Employment Support Team at Yeungnam University (President CHOI Oe-chool), was awarded the Presidential Commendation at the 2024 Job Creation Merit Ceremony held at the Daegu Regional Employment and Labor Office on September 9. NOH was recognized for providing employment support services to local youth and contributing to job creation through collaborations with related organizations like the Regional Employment Center. The "2024 Job Creation Merit Award" is presented to individuals who have contributed to the creation of quality jobs, either by increasing employment opportunities or leading improvements in job quality. It particularly recognizes those who have made significant efforts to expand employment for both youth and middle-aged workers, as well as enhance the overall quality of jobs. Since joining YU Career Support Office in October 2011, NOH has dedicated 12 years and 11 months to supporting youth employment, matching job opportunities, and actively participating in government-supported youth employment policies like the University Job Plus Center project.Under NOH's leadership, YU University Job Plus Center received excellent ratings for seven consecutive years, and in 2024, the university was selected for the Student-Centered Employment Services program. NOH also organized numerous job fairs aimed at local youth, including YU Employment Day, joint recruitment presentations for relocated public institutions in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk area, and the Job Fair for Young Scientists and Technologists in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region. He introduced a dedicated career consultant system, developed tailored career guidance curricula, and established a personalized career and employment counseling system. Noh has also led efforts in providing customized employment support by regularly hosting university-industry exchange events with top local companies and operating various industry-academia cooperative talent development programs. As the chair of the National University Career Managers' Association, he has contributed to spreading best practices in youth employment policies supported by the government across universities. NOH expressed his commitment, saying, “From career exploration and planning to acquiring job-related skills and on-site internships, I will continue to work towards enhancing the employability of Yeungnam University students and local youth through comprehensive employment programs.” YU President CHOI Oe-chool remarked, “This award affirms the excellence of Yeungnam University’s career and employment support system. Conducted from September 9 to 13 at Main and West Gates Aimed at Preventing Accidents Involving Personal Mobility Devices [September 11, 2024] YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) launched a campus-wide electric kickboard safety campaign to coincide with the start of the second semester. The campaign, held at the university’s main gate, involved about 20 participants, including members from the YU Student Support Team, Safety Management Team, and the Student Clubs Union (Chairman Byeon Sang-jin). This safety campaign was initiated to prevent accidents due to the increasing use of personal mobility devices (PMs) like electric kickboards.The campaign provided students with guidance on the correct usage of personal mobility devices, the importance of wearing helmets while riding, safety rules for using electric kickboards on campus, and designated parking areas for shared kickboards. BYEON Sang-jin (Chairman of the Student Clubs Union, Junior, Mechanical Engineering) who participated in the campaign stated, "I hope my fellow students will follow safety guidelines to prevent accidents while using personal mobility devices." HAN Yong-hee, Director of the Student Affairs Office, remarked, "We hope that this campaign helps spread a culture of safe use of electric kickboards and other personal mobility devices on campus, and we will continue to work towards creating a safer campus environment."

Recognized as an Alumnus for Significant Contributions to University Development Through Large Donations YU Metallurgical Engineering Alumnus ('81) Donates KRW100 Million to Support Alma Mater and Future Generations Founded Mirae Thermotech in 2000, Growing it into Korea’s Leading Heat Surface Treatment Company [September 13, 2024] <From the left, CEO BAE Jin-beom and President CHOI Oe-chool> In the morning of the 12th, YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) selected Bae Jin-beom, CEO of Mirae Thermotech, as a member of Chunma Honors and awarded him a certification plaque. “Chunma Honors” is a donor courtesy program which was established by YU in 2020. It was established to honor major donors who contributed in development of the university and to spread a new donation culture at the university. BAE Jin-beom, a graduate of Yeungnam University's Department of Metallurgical Engineering (Class of ’81), is the CEO of Mirae Thermotech, a company specializing in thermal surface treatment. He has shown exceptional dedication to his alma mater, donating ₩100 million in 2021 to support university development. Since founding Mirae Thermotech in 2000, BAE has continuously invested in research and development, overcoming the limitations faced by small businesses through technological innovations in heat treatment. His efforts have led the company to expand its global competitiveness in overseas markets. BAE’s contributions to national industrial development were recognized with the Prime Minister's Award at the 2011 and 2013 Root Technology Competitions, and in 2017, Future Thermotech was designated as a promising small business for exports by the Small and Medium Venture Business Administration. At the plaque presentation ceremony, BAE Jin-beom expressed his gratitude, saying, "The knowledge I gained at the university greatly helped me in managing my business. Participates in the 2024 Ministry of the Interior and Safety's invited training program on the Saemaul Movement Nine Participants, Including Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, University Professors, and Village Leaders, Learn about the Saemaul Movement at YU President CHOI Oe-chool Gives Special Lecture on ‘The Saemaul Movement and the Role of Leaders’ [September 3, 2024] A training delegation from the Central African Republic visited Yeungnam University (President CHOI Oe-chool) to learn about the Saemaul Movement. From August 21 to 29, the delegation spent 8 days and 9 nights at YU for the "African Saemaul Movement Invitational Training." The group included nine participants from the Central African Republic, comprising government officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, village leaders, university professors, and journalists. The program focused on enhancing policy-making capabilities by educating officials and community leaders on the policy implications of the Saemaul Movement. It aimed to share Korea’s development experience and create a human foundation for effectively promoting the Saemaul Movement in the Central African Republic. Participants attended various lectures on Saemaul studies, including President CHOI Oe-chool's special lecture on 'The Saemaul Movement and the Role of Leaders,' as well as sessions on the basic spirit of the Saemaul Movement, Saemaul Movement and Korean rural development policies, reforestation efforts, and the empowerment of women through village organizations. The program also included field trips and cultural experiences, such as visits to the Cheongdo Saemaul Movement Origin Memorial Hall, Gyeongbuk Agricultural Technology Center, Gyeongsan Market, Bukchon Hanok Village, Myeongdong, and Namdaemun Market. Professor Kerebi Henri Clotaire from the University of Bangui, who participated in the training, remarked, “The development experience of Korea through the Saemaul Movement is essential for the Central African Republic, which faces economic difficulties despite its abundant resources. I will strive to effectively utilize and disseminate the knowledge gained from YU, which leads in imparting the Saemaul Movement to the international community, to benefit the Central African Republic.” President CHOI Oe-chool of YU commented, “I believe that Korea’s development experience, especially the Saemaul Movement, can serve as a model for overcoming poverty and economic development in Africa and as a basis for national development policies. Learning directly from YU, which has systematized and institutionalized the Saemaul Movement, holds great significance. I hope that the application and utilization of Saemaul studies and spirit by the training participants will contribute to the development of the Central African Republic.” The Yeungnam University Institute for International Development Cooperation (IIDC), which oversaw this training, provides theoretical and practical training on the Saemaul Movement and Saemaul studies to developing countries through short-term training programs. The IIDC aims to strengthen policy capabilities related to rural development and community development in the training target countries, improving community development, farm income, and quality of life. To date, more than 3,300 trainees from 48 countries have participated in these programs.

Alumni Couple Donates Development Fund for YU Alumni, Alma Mater, and Younger Students Founded David & Young Co. Inc. after immigrating to the U.S., contributing to the expansion of Korean goods exports The Statue displayed in YU Central Library to honor 'Large Donors' [September 4, 2024] <YU unveiled a Statue of David Duk Chong Yoo & Christine Yoo on August 26 in a ceremony honoring the couple’s contributions> YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) held the bust unveiling ceremony for David Duk Chong Yoo & Christine Yoo on the 26th. The Statue is displayed in the donor recognition space on the left side of the entrance of YU’s Central Library.David Duk Chong Yoo & Christine Yoo were recognized for their significant contributions to expanding the export of Korean goods and pioneering wholesale markets in the U.S. as entrepreneurs, as well as for their donations to their alma mater, YU, aimed at supporting its development and fostering a culture of giving. Both David Duk Chong Yoo (Class of '59, Economics) and Christine Yoo (Class of '61, English Language and Literature) are alumni of YU. After emigrating to New Jersey in 1972, they overcame challenging circumstances to establish David & Young Co. Inc., which contributed to expanding the export of Korean goods to the U.S. wholesale market. David Duk Chong Yoo held various leadership positions, including Senior Vice President of the Korean American Association of Greater New York in 1982, President of the Korean American Chamber of Commerce of New York in 1984, a volunteer member of the '88 Seoul Olympic Support Committee, and Director of the Korean Sports Council in the U.S. East Coast. Recognized for his contributions to the export of Korean goods to the U.S. and his various volunteer activities in the Korean American community, he was awarded the National Medal of Honor by the South Korean government in 1987. <Mr. YOO Young-hyun and his wife express gratitude on behalf of David Duk Chong Yoo & Christine Yoo.> Despite working in the U.S., Chairman YOO has consistently demonstrated a deep affection for his alma mater. In 1997, he became the first overseas alumnus to receive the 'Proud YU Alumnus Award.' David Duk Chong Yoo & Christine Yoo, both of whom experienced poverty in their early years, have shown particular interest in supporting students who face financial difficulties. On August 23, at the 16th Gurye Women’s Cheonha Jangsa and University Jangsa Ssirum Competition held at Gurye Indoor Gymnasium in Jeollanam-do, the YU Ssirum Team (Coach Heo Yong) won the university team competition, marking their second consecutive victory at this event. Following their victory in last year’s competition, the YU Ssirum Team successfully defended their title. Additionally, after winning the Korean Sports Council President’s Cup in April, the team secured their second championship and back-to-back wins this season, reaffirming their status as the nation’s top university ssirum team. <HONG Ji-heun, who took first place in the Jangsa division at the 16th Gurye Women's Cheonha Jangsa and University Jangsa Ssirum Competition, celebrates his 6th title of the season.> Despite facing challenges due to injuries ahead of the competition, captain KIM Min-jae (4th year, Faculty of Physical Education), along with KIM Nam-woo and SHIM Yoo-chan (1st year, Department of Special Physical Education), delivered outstanding performances. The team defeated Kyung Hee University 4-2 in the semifinals and Dong-A University 4-1 in the finals to secure the championship. In the individual competition, HONG Ji-heun (3rd year, Faculty of Physical Education) won the Jangsa division, celebrating his 6th title of the season. The award for Outstanding Coach, which is traditionally given to the coach of the winning team, was presented to Assistant Coach LEE Seung-ho, a gesture of recognition from Head Coach HEO Yong. Coach HEO Yong said, "This team victory is the result of the unity and dedication of all 12 players, not just those who competed. I extend my gratitude to all the players who worked hard together to achieve this win, and to Assistant Coach LEE Seung-ho, who has consistently given his best in training our athletes.” Meanwhile, YU’s Ssirum Team, established in 1954 and celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, continues to maintain its status as the top-ranked university ssirum team in the country, following last year’s ranking. YU and LIG Nexone Host '2024 Defense Industry Job Camp' Instructors from various job fields offer intensive job-focused education during a 3-day, 2-night camp Mentoring program provides students with real-world insights on recruitment, job roles, and corporate life [August 27, 2024] In a collaborative effort to cultivate talent in the defense industry, a key sector in the region, YU(President CHOI Oe-chool) and Gyeongsangbuk-do partnered with LIG Nexone, a leading defense company, to host the 2024 Defense Industry Job Camp. The training, which was held at the Gyowon Dream Center in Gyeongju from August 21 to 23, was attended by 67 students from YU. The camp featured numerous LIG Nexone professionals as instructors, who delivered lectures on the defense industry and conducted job-specific competency training. During the camp, LIG Nexone employees also mentored students, providing valuable insights into recruitment, job roles, and daily corporate life. On the final day, a talk session with the company's HR team allowed students to engage in a Q&A about job functions, desired candidate qualities, and workplace culture. JEONG Jin-uk (4th-year, Department of Mechanical Engineering at YU) shared his experience: “It was a beneficial opportunity to learn practical knowledge that's hard to gain through regular coursework. Understanding the defense industry and receiving detailed job training have helped me consider my future career path after graduation. The knowledge gained during this camp will also be a strong asset in writing resumes or preparing for interviews.” LIG Nexone's Vice President, LEE Geon-hyuk, who delivered a special lecture on the future of the defense industry, stated, "I commend the students for their enthusiasm in learning about the defense industry, a field not easily accessible in a university setting.
